Do you recognize these symptoms?!

Question: I am not severly overweight, but could stand to lose 10/15 lbs. I have been working out at the gym - to this end. The other day, while doing walking/jogging on the treadmill I experienced some fluttering feeling in my chest. It was at the most intense part of my workout - I let it pass & kept going and then I felt it again. My left shoulder and arm didn't feel numb, but very light. I stopped jogging & went back to a peppy walk and the symptoms stopped - but before I stopped I put my hands on the pulse bar and so that it was at 140 (normal for me is around 64 and while I'm on the treadmill it is usually at 110ish).

Do you think this is my 46yr old female body just getting back in shape, or something that I should take the time to get checked out?

Hey! I agree with the previous comment. Having a check up will definitely do you some good. Just to make sure you heart is perfectly healthy (it sounds as though you are having heart palpitations - this can be caused by many things including too much potassium in the diet) and perform a blood test if necessary to make sure your glands are performing normally and that your vitamin and mineral intake is sufficient and not deficient or in excess.

This could also be your body's reaction to suddenly doing exercise again. Start slowly and build yourself up - if you wanted to go for a run, start off with a brisk walk and let your body get a rhythm, go up to a job and let your body adjust to that, then take it up to the final level of running.

Still, i would definitely suggest seeing your doctor for a general check up. They will also be able to suggest an appropriate exercise regime for you so you don't have to experience these symptoms again. They can be frightening i know. I hope you feel better soon. Good luck!

A 46 year old check-up will not do any harm to you.It is advisable as we all head to older age to have a thorough check-up then if there is any thing not right we get a chance to fix it.All the best.

You should go to the heart doc. When I was 43 the same thing happened, I was a US Marine, and in good shape, I was running 3 miles in 18 min. One day I started a run at lunch time, ran about a mile that was when I had the same thing you described happen to me, I slowed to a walk and everything went back to normal, so I started running again, 2 stints later I was fixed.

I think the time and effort involved in getting a treadmill stress test would be an excellent investment. You would then be able to pursue your workout without worry. People have come to be aware that cardiac symptoms in women can be very hard to interpret. Especially if these symptoms recur predictably at roughly the same work load, why not get them checked out.

yes you should go see the doctor.

if your left shoulder and arm felt light or different, it could be a sign of heart attack or stroke. my mom got an TIA or transcient ischemic attack at 42. i also know a 20 y/o teenager who had a heart attack because of severe emotional problems (both his parents died and he was living alone with his sister so things are really difficult for them).

If you didn't swallow a butterfly while working out, then I would have the Fluttering checked out. 46 or 146 listen to your body. It might be telling you something important.

Eat less animal fat and more vegetables.
