Autoimmune Pancreatitis?!

Question: My dad just had a large tumor removed from his pancreas and we are so glad that it's not cancer, but when my mom was explaining the autoimmune pancreatitis to me, she didn't tell me much. What I gather is that it's rare, and he will need to get blood tests from now on because his body might attack other organs. I tried to look it up online but I can't find much about it. Does anyone have expeirence with this or know how many people get this? Thank you.

Here you are. It's rare. Unfortunately, other autoimmune diseases are not. Additionally, once diagnosed w/one autoimmune disorder or disease. The patient is more susceptible to a second autoimmune illness. Be VERY glad it wasn't Cancer. Good Luck to you both.

Pancreatitis does not cause tumors, although having chronic pancreatitis over time can lead to cancer. Pancreatitis is caused from inflammation of the pancreas. Not always caused from alcohol. There are many other issues that can cause a person to develope pancreatitis. There is a disease where a person developes multiple small tumors of the pancreas but these develope into cancer quickly. Autoimmune diseases are not rare. There are many types, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, psoriatic arthritis. Autoimmune diseases cause the body to treat normal tissue as invaders and attack. Treating it like an invader, that should be distroyed. Most auto immune disease attack different type of tissue, although it does happen with the pancreas, it does however NOT cause tumors. There is something called a pseudo cyst that involves the pancreas, but it is not a tumor. Your father will most likely need to see a special physcian known as a rheumatologist to help with this very treatable disease.
