Allergens in food or the environment -- you never know until it attacks how much your body can tolerate in a lifetime. After that, avoidance, if possible, has been the most common adjustment.

I've seen it in myself and with members of my own family. No more food with shellfish for my sister and brother-in-law. They joy of gorging on shrimps and crabs must just be a memory for them. They can't even eat anything that is made with a hint of shellfish.

My son can no longer visit my sister (who has two or three cats) because after a cat scratch from a landlady's cat one summer when he was serving as student intern in Idaho, his eyes burn and run, he has trouble breathing around cats.

After a lifetime of suffering from hay fever, I moved to San Francisco, a coastal city. Cool weather, fog, clean air -- no more hay fever. But after ten to fifteen years here, hay fever returned and I suffer when the weather is right for the spreading of local pollen from trees and grasses.

You are not alone.

First of all the cats hair or kitty litter may be just overwhelming for you right now. Secondly allergies change for people somtimes for good or for worse. Whatever it is you will want something to boost up your immune system.

It can happen as you get older.
