Headgear can be harmful to the skin in many ways. I had headgear in my teenage years and hated it. I would develop rashes, which could bleed at some times. Finally, I spoke with a dermatologist. She told me to wear small pieces of foam under the headgear pads at night and to cover them with tissues, which I should change every day. As gross as it seems, small amounts of fluid can come out of our mouths at night, and cause fungus on the pads. This can cause rashes. The tissues should help prevent this, and the foam should eliminate or reduce discomfort. I recomend doing this to avoid further rashes.

Headgear's effects on the skin can also be positive in some cases. As a teanager, I had MANY freckles. The places where the headgear's pads were, the freckles dissapeared. I was overjoyed!

But this is a good experience I happened to have. I know how you feal about your ortho saying it was nothing, mine did to. I had to get my parents to take me to the dermotoligist instead. Hopefully my advice will help you with your headgear problems. Good luck!

Sounds like an allergic reaction to something on the part that touched your skin; cleaning solution? plastic? maybe ask ortho if you can wrap parts that touch your skin in a fleece or cotton cloth.
good luck! I know my daughter would be mortified to wake up w/ that reaction so you are right to find out what is going on.
