Is Omnicef better than Augmentin or Amoxicillin?!

Question: It depends on what your trying to treat... the best course of medicine is the one that is appropriate for the problem your dealing with... there is no blanket this medicine is better than that one all the time.

normally you would start with something like amoxicillin as the first choice because if it is effective it is also cheap... augmentin is just amoxicillin with clavulanate potassium added to it... it really is best for things like urinary tract infections (better than amoxicillin alone). Omnicef is a newer drug and is therefore more expensive... It offers the advantage of being a once a day pill (liquid would be taken in the case of your dauther) but since it cost much more per pill than amoxicillin what's the point? If you had strep throat either Amoxicillin or Omnicef could be used... you would spend what 40 dollars for Omnicef and if you got the amoxicillin from Wal-mart 4 dollars..... is taking a medicine 1 a day instead of 3 times a day worth 36 dollars to you?

In the end, I would say amoxicillin is the better of the three for general needs but Augmentin for special needs like urinary tract infections... Omnicef is only better if your dealing with a drug resistant strain.

Ooops just saw your edit... amoxicillin is the better of those three because of price... though frankly Zithromax would be my choice for ear infection... For strep I would go with Zithromax, it works and is better tolerated in very young children than Omnicef. I'm guessing the Omnicef rep that visited your doctor simply had a lower cut blouse or offered a better hotel in Hawaii than the Zithromax rep, unfortunately that's how a lot of doctors decide what to prescribe...

not if you are planning to get high.

Cefdinar is generally well tolerated, but however there are some side effects which are, Diarrhea being the most common or loose stools, nausea, abdominal pains, & headaches & what would worry me is it can cause bacteria in the Colon. And with it being in such a young child I wouldnt tollerate those side affects.

In Augmentin I have found that the only side affect i got was the fact I got Thrush down in my Private. But that generally happens with most antibiotics & it is treated easily, so I would stick with Augmentin, il try post you a link its, omnicef more:drug_uses
Hope I was of some help

I my opinion, Amoxicillin works the best,
Due to how strong it is, it kills of the infection quickly, and leaves it gone.

Omnicef is perfectly appropriate for a child with strep or an ear infection. It is a different class of antibiotics and is newer.

If you are concerned, why don't you ask the doctor.

PS-- I think zithromax is overused and use it rarely.
