Answers: triple bypass heart surgery?
This Patient Guide is written for the loved ones of heart patients who are dealing with the short-term stress that comes with a test, procedure or recent diagnosis of heart disease. It explains why support is so important to a loved one with heart disease. It also offers practical strategies on how to support a loved one while also taking care of yourself.
This is a tricky question to answer because it depends on the patient. I am an RN who works in the CCU (cardiac ICU) and I take care of patients who come directly out of surgery after bypass. The normal heart rate for an adult is 60-100 beats per minute. If you are asking what the normal rate is a month after surgery, I would tell you 60-100, but if you are asking what it is directly out of surgery, well then that is a challenge. Most patients directly out of surgery (within hours) will have a low pulse and low blood pressure because it is better for the heart this way. It helps it to recover after coming off the bypass machine. Some patient will have a high heart rate due to various causes such as 120-130's. The reason for a low and high rate rate directly after surgery are complex and would produce an exhaustive list. Go with 60-100 beats per minute as a good reference for when the patient is fully recovered and out of the hospital.
