Answers: and it doesnt want to go away. he took medicines but nothing worked. what can he have?

a cough should only last for a week. if it does last for longer, or if he starts to spit blood, he must go to see a doctor.

but meanwhile, here are some remedies.

for "wet" coughs, suck on a horehound candy. (helps bring up phlegm) OR try lemon drops.

for "dry coughs" rely on slippery elm lozenges.

OR try any hard candy.

HERE ARE OTHER REMEDIES
- combine peppermint candy, lemon juice, and honey. heat candy in lemon juice until latter is dissolved. then add honey and stir. take 1 to 2 tablespoons as needed.

- blend lemon juice with a little honey and a pinch of cayenne pepper and swallow.

-peel and finely chopp 6 medium onions and put along with half cup honey into a pan over a pot of boiling water. cover and let simmer for 2 hours. strain and pour mixture into a covered jar. take 1 tablespoon every 2 to 3 hours.

-mix 5 to 6 cloves with 1 cup honey and leave mixture in the refrigerator overnight. in the morning, remove the cloves and take 1 teaspoon or 1 tablespoon of the honey as needed.

- Thyme tea

-marshmallow tea

- spice tea: add half teaspoon powdered ginger and a pinch each of clove and cinnamon powder to a cupful or just-boiled water and drink.

-buy chest rub, such as Mentholatum Ointment Aromatic Cold care. They should not be taken internally.
OR try making a mustard plaster to loosen up chest congestion. mix one part-mustard powder and two parts flour in a bowl. add just enough water to make a paste. spread paste on a dishtowel , fold towel in half and press against the skin (never put the mustard mixture directly against the skin.) check skin often and remove plaster if your skin becomes too red or irritated. some people suggest using an egg white instead of water to make a plaster thats less likely to burn.

since its your husband's thats sick, i suggest that you ask him to lie on his stomach on a firm bed or mat. and slap cupped hands rhythmically over the back, progressing from the lower back up toward the neck. repeat several times until his congestion starts to loosen up.

AND to help prevent nocturnal coughing, use a humidifier in your room to moisten the air. particulary in the winter.

it could be any number of things, onset of a new allergy, tuberculosis, pnuemonia, bronchitis. He needs to see a doctor for testing and further work up.

possibly seasonal allergies. sometimes you develop them as you get older

I don't know of any medians but my I cough a lot to. Ask him if his throat tickles and want go away. If so I don't think there is a thing to do about it. But if you want to get serious take him to a doctor.

he needs to see his dr.

not to scare you, but I had a cough for about 2 months once, and when I went to the doctor, he said get more rest, and if it didn't get better, he'd have to test for a few things.

He was going to test for fungus. your husband could have a fungus growing in his lungs (pretty common. a doctor can identify it, and treat it.). dangerous if it goes untreated.

he was also going to test for cancer. a persistent cough over a period of months can be a symptom of a few kinds of cancer. do definitly have him tested. it's best to catch cancer early.

for me, I started getting more sleep. (i quit my 4am custodial job on campus, and went to bed early.) The cough went away. even now, 4 years later, if i don't get enough sleep for more than 3 days in a row, my cough comes back. I guess it's my body's way of complaining about a lack of rest!

Make sure he's getting enough sleep. Then I'd say take him to a clinic, and see what a doctor says. Better to be safe than sorry!

Its probably best to go see a doctor. But first, what kind of cough is it? Is it dry or productive (as in, does he cough out mucus sometimes or is it wheezy-like). There are different kinds of cough syrups for the 2 kinds and sometimes using an inappropriate syrup is effectless. Also, does it get worse at night?
