Strep throat, antibiotics, eye swollen shut? Go back to doctor?!

Question: I got diagnosed with strep throat Sunday.

I started taking cephalexin that night from an urgent care center.

The next day, I got really congested and went to my regular doctor who said it looked like I also had a sinus infection as well.

She changed the antibiotic to clarithromycin because she said that worked better on strep.

I started taking that yesterday.

I had an allergic reaction to penicillin a year ago when I took it for strep but it was just a rash.

The doctor said to try to "tough out" any side effects from the clarithromycin if I got them.

I thought maybe that meant like stomach problems, but this is different.

I can't put my contacts in either eye and my right eye was swollen shut when I woke up this morning.

I rinsed them out and took allergy medicine so the swelling is improved but I still can't put my contacts in.

Would you go back to the doctor even if she said to "tough out" any side effects?

I'd certainly at least call...that wasn't the sort of reaction she meant to "tough out" I'm sure. Glad you thought to take the antihistamine. Call as soon as the office opens...or call the answering service if you're feeling worse...or go to the ED if you start swelling again anywhere. don't take another pill until you talk to doc again and explain reaction.

Sheesh! Find a different doctor! 'Tough it out' indeed! Where did that person get a license, a Cracker Jack box?

Good luck!

You definitely need to see a different doctor. Kindly inform your new doctor about your allergies to medicines and food, so he can prescribe the right medications. Good luck! ???

go to the emrgency it could be a severe allergic reaction
