How is it posible that amputees can experience sensation from the missing limb?!

The explanation for phantom pain actually has to do with a body map each one of us has in our own brain. It's a bit complex to explain, but basically, your brain has a map of every inch of you. That's sort of how your brain knows which side of which elbow you just scratched, or exactly where that mosquito bit. Just because you remove a limb doesn't automatically alter that brain map. What it does do is remove the nerve sensations that the brain would ordinarily expect to get from it. You aren't consciously aware of most of your body most of the time- for instance, you aren't really paying attention to the pressure on your buns sitting in your chair. At least you weren't until you read this. Anyway, although you were not consciously aware of it, your brain was. It was getting inputs from all those nerves in your buns. Now, if for some reason the input were to stop, the brain would still be checking out for them- and for reasons we don't completely understand- if there are no inputs from where there should be inputs, the brain seems to sub in old reports. And the amputee reports the phantom sensation. It's just a conflict between what you logically know, and what the brain has on record. I can't say it's proof we are spiritual beings, but it does suggest that we are wired in a very complex and wonderful manner all the same. The entire body is a source of wonder and awe, not the least because it does all work so well. And in spite of all our technological ability, we still can't build machines that can even come close to duplicating even the simpliest of the functions.
hi im not a amputee but my uncle and my mother in law were but yes this has happened to both of them my mother in law used to go to scratch her leg cause it was itchy but there was no leg there she was told by a spiritulist that it was bacause the spirit world still saw her body has whole, but the doctors say its because your brain still sends signals to the amputated limb, but i dont know how when there is no limb there, i personally think its more to do with spiritulism than medical...hope this helps
