Would you say she is a positive/negative person?!

Question: A friend of yours is severely asthmatic and it has brought on some limitations within her life. She wants to try to lose weight so is trying to walk on the treadmill. Because of her illness, she can only do a little at a time. You asked her how the treadmill was coming along and she said it's good but she pushed herself a little too much the other day because she went for an hour and ran for part of the time. She said she had problems breathing all day because of it. So now she just has to pull back a little. So she did less time yesterday. She also told you that when she was put on steroids for her asthma, it made her gain 6 pounds within a week. Though you told her it wasn't her fault, she said she had to counteract it somehow so that's why she started the treadmill.

Would you see this girl as a positive or a negative person?

positive at heart. Maybe negative realistically she has to learn from trial and error to set a balance with everything. Its not easy :(

Getting exercise is a good thing even with the asthma being as severe as it is for her, however she does have alternatives to the treadmill. She can go for walks instead and get some fresh air at the same time. This would also let her slow down and take it easy if she started having a hard time breathing again.

Personally, I would let her know that if she put on that much weight within one week, I would speak to her doctor and see if there's an alternative medication that she can try. Based on that theory of approx 6lbs/week that's 24 lbs/month which to me would be concern.

Overall she needs to make sure she's getting exercise, but she has to remember not to over do it based on her condition and she needs to realize those limitations so that she doesn't cause herself unnecessary discomfort.

I'd say she's a little more negative then positive, even though she's doing the right things, however, she needs to realize her limitations and not over do it. If she does, she's doing it to herself and for that she wouldn't get any sympathy from me. (I know it sounds cold hearted).

She's obviously depressed by her condition and maybe by her life. Don't tell her that she is being negative because I'm sure that she already knows. I am her. I have been disabled for 7 years now and it really sucks to see your friends and family blast by you and you get moments of self pity and moments of hating your friends and family for what they can do and you can't. Although my problems are different from your friend's problems; I know how she feels. There are times when after all the steroids... ( I have an auto-immune disease) you just are so tired and don't want to get up and go. Maybe seeing a psychologist would better help your friend. Her weight could be from depression or it could be from her thyroid which could make her tired. Does she have dull, dry hair and nails that break easily? Being overweight is part of it. Is she losing her hair? How about her periods? How are they? Are they heavy? If so have her talk to her doc about taking her TSH level in her blood.
