My grandma has swollen legs?!

Question: So today she took off her knee highs and noticed they were wet. Come to find out there was a little pin sized hole in her leg and water was comming out. She put gauze over it and elevated her legs. Anyone know what this might be?

A lot of times older people get a condition called "cellulitis" which basically means 'inflamed skin' and depending on how severe it is depends on whether or not it is painful. But usually with cellulitis the legs are red and scaley....

it sounds more like something called 'edema' which basically means swelling. A lot of older people get this when they have heart and lung conditions, and it is especially common in the legs.

When the fluid build up (in both cellulitis and edema) becomes more than what the skin can handle, it will "weep" (which means fluid comes out of the skin)

Unless it is painful, your grandma should be alright....however, I would ask her if she is on Lasix or any other kind of diuretic, because this will help her pee out the extra fluid that is being trapped in her legs.

Hope this helps!! :o)

it could be an infection. take her to a family doctor or a dermatologist.

Kidney failure?
'cause that's what removes the water from people

She needs to let her family doctor know this is occurring so that he can monitor this. She might also need a special wrap around her legs to help dry this up. She probably needs her diuretic medication adjusted (water pill) so that it will decrease the swelling in her legs and she needs to keep them elevated as much as possible until the swelling goes down. She really needs her doctor to monitor this closely or soon, she will have a massive infection brewing.
