Hives and rash, 3 days AFTER stopping 10 days of Cipro?!

Question: My friend took 10 days of Cipro for bronchial infection. No noticeable side affects. However, three days later, she has hives, rash and swelling on her hands. Is this likely from the Cipro? or does she need to seek to discover another allergen?

Yes, this is definitely due to Cipro. Your friend's symptoms (hives, rash, and swelling of the hands) are consistent with a condition called Serum Sickness, a Type 3 form of hypersensitivity. It is best explained as a form of delayed hypersensitivity to an allergen; in this case the allergen is the protein found in the antibiotic ciprofloxacin. Treatment is Benadryl (per orem); in more severe cases some physicians prescribe corticosteroids.

ADD: In patients who were previously exposed to a similar allergen, symptoms may develop within 1 to 3 days. But in general, symptoms do not develop until 7 to 21 days after the first exposure.

Topical application of hydrocortisone will not help much. I usually prescribe Benadryl PO for mild cases and reserve Steroids for severe cases. So far majority of Serum Sickness cases that I have seen respond to Benadryl.

no i bet its from the antibiotic. those are the usual signs of a reaction to a medicine like that. put some hydrocortisone cream on it!

No, she needs to call her doctor to counter act this medicine, it is used for Bronchitis, sinus infections, severe flu, inner and middle ear infections, and upper resp infections, the side effects can be rash after taking the medicine, it has built up in her system and she needs some med to counter act it.

I took this for my inner ear infection in February and it did the same thing to me, my doctor says it can do this.....and put in my chart not to give to me again, this is a mild reaction to the med.......hope your friend gets relief soon.

my doctor put me on Benadryl 25 mg, 2 times a day, till rash and itching stopped.......see if her doctor will recommend the same, you can get Benadryl over the counter but doctor may put her on something else..

I advise to go see her doctor. Cipro does stay in your system several days, but it's possible she needs a cortisone or diphenhydramine shot to counteract the effects of whatever ailment it is.

She should see her doctor first. Side effects from Cipro are not unknown, nor unlike what you describe. What is a bit unusual is that it did not occur until three days after DC. Many other things can cause hives and rash, for example, they are not uncommon with stress--perhaps the stress of the infection.

In any case, if she still has unabated symptoms, take her to her doctor.

She should see a doctor, cause if shes reacting to Cipro, 10 days was more than enough time for her to have reacted, xcept shes reacting to the lack, of use of it.

that's allergic reaction or the side effect of Cipro(ciprofloxin) is amember of the quinlone group or antibiotic, pick blood levels are reached 1-2 hours after dosing if you take an antacid containing magnesium or aluminuim hydroxide (most have both)it will bind up 90% of the drug rendering it mostly ineffective. same is tru with zinc, iron and calcium

I would go to the doctor!

This does not sound like a reaction from the Cipro. To treat it I suggest drinking lots of water and avoiding any new soaps or shampoos that she may have tried recently. Also to boost her immune system try lactibacillus acidophilus or else products containing bifidus regularis like Activia drinks. When a person takes antibiotics the good bacteria are also wiped out in the intestine. Soil contact can cause allergic reactions. Does she garden? Whatever the cause most of these type of reactions will subside in time without lots of intervention. The body wants to return to its normal equilibrium. I personally do not believe in using the corticosteroids that many physicians will subscribe. The reason is that the body wants to release its toxins through the skin and these try to suppress that natural release. Let me know how this turns out as I am genuinely interested. Thank you!

Cipro doesn't usually give such side effects. If she was allergic to that medication, the symptoms would have started on her first or second day. They would probably be nausea, and the ones you mentioned. However, the fact that they appeared after Cipro ran its course of 10 days, leads me to believe it is something else that she is allergic to. Did she talk to her Dr.?

This sounds strange, but from experience I have seen it: After being treated with an antibiotic for about 10 days, your body may have strange cravings and if you indulge in that food, . Sometimes it along with the Cipro still in your system react to form an allergy.

Also, has she changed dish soap? First of all, she should tell her Dr. He probably knows the answer, and allergy testing won't be necessary.

your friend should drink lots of water, and visit the GP as soon as possible

I agree with Joe B - sounds just like many patients I have dealt with after taking Cipro. It is a strong antibiotic and hard for some to tolerate.

your friend should check with the doctor who gave the drug. reactions usually happen pretty fast, so this could be a secondary problem. did the original infection clear up? have your friend make an appointment with a dermatologist just to be on the safe side. better safe than sorry!

I would suggest that it is from the Cipro. I had the same thing happen to me with Cipro. I wouldn't just accept the answers on here though unless there are pysicians answering. Try benadryl, but I would suggest a Dr. My son got hives and rash a week after finishing a round of another antibiotic. Good luck!

What are the side effects of Cipro? If you are looking for another pill for allergies, do not take Singular. Depression and Suicide seem to be one of the rare side effects. I would discontinue Cipro. Has she seen an allergist?
This is the season for allergies. If I were her, I'd start wearing a filter over my mouth and nose.

yes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you were my child, you would be at a Dr. today.

This can be a reaction to the Cipro. A yeast infection is also a common reaction. Benadryl is usually helpful but she should call the doctor that prescribed it and see what she should do. Good luck.

Sometimes to much of medicine, can give you a reaction as hives and rashes, hopefully she go's to the hospital or doctor, any medicine you take stays in your system for a good while, hopefully she did not drink, alcohol, or over the counter medicine, or even some medicine you even have to watch what you eat, that may be a factor, most likely it is from an allergic reaction, call a pharmacy ,or read the directions, for side affects of medicine, ASAP.
