If a person has genital herpes can they have oral sex when they are not having a!

Question: Yes.

If you give someone with genital herpes oral sex, you CANNOT catch genital herpes that way.

The only thing making contact with their genitals is your mouth, so the only thing you could get it ORAL herpes - the common cold sore or fever blister - which 80% of adults have anyway.

If your partner has genital herpes caused by the virus hsv-1 (the virus that causes the vast majority of oral cold sores/fever blisters), then by giving them oral sex you are only taking the same risk you take when you kiss one of the 8 out of 10 people who have ever had a cold sore in the past. And all you could get is oral hsv-1, which 80% of adults have on their mouths already and so can't catch again to start with.

If you partner has genital herpes caused by the virus hsv-2, then you could catch it on your mouth, but hsv-2 is not well adapted to the mouth, and chances are if you caught it there you would NEVER experience a second outbreak. It is also hardly ever infectious - something like 0.01% of the time, rather than 18% of the time for cold sores caused by hsv-1.

Besides which, since most people have oral hsv-1 already, that makes it more difficult for them to catch oral hsv-2. 80% of people already have hsv-1 on their mouth. Despite the fact that 1 in 4 of us have hsv-2 on the genitals, only 3% of oral herpes is caused by hsv-2 compared to the 97% caused by hsv-1.

Most people don't consider the chance of catching a cold sore a big risk - since most of them get them already.

The highest risk is actually the other way round. What people should be asking is whether someone who has had a cold sore should EVER give unprotected oral sex when they don't have one. People with a history of cold sores giving their partners oral sex accounts for 50% of genital herpes infections these days - it is why 70% of genital herpes infections among young women are caused by hsv-1. I caught genital herpes through RECEIVING oral sex from a partner that had had cold sores in the past.

yea

they can but the commercials say you can still pass it even when not experiences a breakout

Genital herpes can be spread even when you don't have active symptoms.

yes but you should ALWAYS use protection especially if they have it!!!! It doesn't matter if it is oral

I wouldn't even touch someone with herpes.....eewww

Yes, but it is very risky.

Hell you can have oral sex even if you are having an outbreak - I just wouldn't recommend it.

Your friend,
Zen Jesus

You can pass genital herpes to your partner even when you are not having an outbreak. This myth has given herpes to a lot of people that thought they were safe when in fact they were at equal risk.

yea you can...same with herpes on the lips...i have herpes form on the lips and it comes n goes every so often and the guys i kissed never got it

EDIT~ now that i thought bout it...i think u can cuz if u swallow their semen or *** n u get that in your system then i believe u can catch it...herpes is in ur system forever so! i wouldnt then lol

You can still pass it on even if you are not having an outbreak so it's best to ALWAYS use protection.

put tape on your mouth ewww cross!

SURE!!!!!!! But just for the record 70 precent of the people who don't have any sign of an outbreak give there partners herpes. So you don't have to b having an outbreak to give it to your partner! Believe it or not that is when most people catch it when there is no sight of it.

yeah, with a condom.

even if there are no signs of an outbreak the body is still producing and shedding the virus, so they could still infect their partner.

Well, even when there is not an outbreak you can still pass it on. It is recommended to just use protection. Use a condom or purchase dental dams for female protection.

yeah they can even if they have a breakout, what is stopping them? but im assuming you meant that if the std would be passed. and that answer is yes, there is always a chance

yes but there is less of a chance as when there is an outbreak and even less if they are taking medication. but there is still a small chance of passing it on durring outbreaks.
bw condoms are not very effective against herpes since they don't cover all areas that herpes can spread to.
