Well, it's the active ingredient itself: diphenhydramine hydrochloride. Remove it (to get rid of the sleepiness), and a Benadryl pill becomes nothing more than a placebo.
You might try Claritin instead. It's available over-the-counter, although it is more expensive than Benadryl. It basically does the same thing (relieves allergy symptoms), but without the drowsiness.
Its called Diphenhydramine. It is also the active ingredient in Tylenol PM
These make many people sleepy but not everyone. You can buy non-drowsy formulas these days. Have you tried those?
Take a half of a Benedryl tablet every 4 hours as needed.
