I think I have a food allergy?!

Question: Okay so today I was talking at the practice for the play that my church is having. we were eating candy in the kitchen and all of a sudden I got this really weird feeling in my body. I felt warm and I started to cough. I was wondering why and than I realized that I was having trouble breathing. I was coughing but it was just little coughs like not huge ones but it sounded kind of like I was gasping while I was coughing and it sounded like I was weezing. I walked out of the room and I went to get my water. I took a sip and felt better. I noticed when I felt better that my eyes were tearing up. After that the feeling went away.

The weird thing is that this has happened before and it always happens when I'm eating. I'm not sure if anyone noticed but people looked at me weird when I came back in the room.

what could this be:
I know I may have been choking but it didn't feel like there was anything stuck in my throat and it started after I swallowed.I was also hot but not sweaty.

Get your Doctor to run some tests because you are haveing an alergic reaction to something and it's causeing your throat to swell shut.
Good luck

You should definitely go see a doctor. First, write down everything you ate that day, and check to make sure not to eat anything you ate that day that was "new". In many cases, food allergies result in hives, which is not a big deal, but having trouble breathing is a very bad sign. This might mean that you are having an asthma attack, perhaps because of the allergy. If this is the case, you would need to get an inhaler. If anything else occurs, such as hives, take zrtec. Be sure to get it checked!! And soon!

Anaphylaxis is not cured by drinking water. There's no such thing as mild anaphylaxis; it's an all-or-nothing, and once it starts you do have to take epinephrine to recover. You can have an allergic reaction involving wheezing and throat swelling without going into anaphylaxis, though, and it sounds like that's what you have experienced.

Since the symptoms were alleviated by leaving the area and taking a drink, it was probably not a food you ate that caused the reaction. Once you've swallowed something, if you have a reaction you will continue to experience it as long as the allergen remains in your body. Instead, I'd suspect that you reacted to either an inhaled environmental substance-- something in the ventilation, the carpet, a perfume someone was wearing, pet dander, etc.-- or else food that someone else was eating that you hadn't had. The latter seems especially plausible considering that you mention you've only had these symptoms when eating.

Did anyone else have a specific kind of candy that you didn't? Could it have contained nuts or peanuts, even in trace amounts? Nut allergies can be among the most severe, and many people will have a reaction just from being in the same room. Think back on the other times you've felt this way-- can you remember what you and others were eating? If you can think of a food or another substance that might be the cause, try to avoid it completely for a week or two and see if you have these symptoms again.

If you can't think of a possible culprit yourself, make an appointment with your doctor and explain that you think you have an allergy but aren't sure to what. Your doctor should administer a battery of scratch tests, in which a number of common allergens are applied to small scratches on your back and the doctor then checks to see which substances cause inflammation. You may even have multiple allergies that you aren't aware of.

Another possibility is that you have mild asthma, which could be triggered by eating and alleviated by resting and taking a drink.

Nonetheless, it's important to get this checked out, especially since you've experienced trouble breathing. Allergies can go from a mild reaction to a life-threatening one without any warning. If you are at risk, it's important for you and others around you to know so that you can be protected, and you should also be prescribed an Epi Pen for emergencies. Asthma is nothing to take lightly either, so do see your doctor.
