Strep throat and antibiotics?..In a foreign country???!

Question: I'm currently in Sofia, Bulgaria and the day i got here I came down with what I'm assuming is strep throat. I had a fever, a horribly sore throat, a white lump on the back of my throat, basically all the symptoms of strep. I went to a clinic in Sofia and they prescribed me antibiotics, Augmentin..which is amoxicillin and clavulanic acid(potassium salt). I started taking the antibiotics 12 hours ago and haven't seen much of a change...how long do antibiotics usually last?? And has anyone had experience taking antibiotics in a foreign country?? it makes me a little nervous..they didnt give me a strep test or anything..they just looked and then wrote the prescription. . Anyways, I'm miserable and scared and any advice on if all is well or if I should go to a doctor when I go home would be great. thanks!

Ya man, don't stress over it. Thats one of the right medications to treat strep, it also treats tonsilitis too. They probably didnt do a strep test b/c they have seen a million and one strep throats, tonsilitis, sore throats etc before. The meds will take a good 24 to 72 hours to really start combatting those pesty bulgarian bacteria. Dont stop taking the antibiotic til they are all gone, this is very important.
Take some motrin or ibuprofen and some tylenol to help with the fever and pain. Find some good cough drops and keep on taken them til the antibotic kicks in.

good luck and have a good time in Bulgaria

Antibiotics generally take 24-48 hours to start seeing results.

Prescriptions, especially antibiotics require 10 days of steady intake to resolve a problem.

12 hours is not enough time to know anything.

Take Excedrin or aspirin every 4 hours and mouthwash with Hydrogen peroxide at least 3 times a day. It is very healing and these things will help the problem.

Antibiotics take about 48 hours to act. Augmentin is good for strep. Even if it is not strep, it will not do any harm. Relax and continue the treatment.
