Low/No carb eating?!

Question: I've been type one officially for 3 months :D
Not that it's anything to celebrate, but I'm healthier now then I was 3 months ago!

Anyway, I'm curious about no/low carb eating.
Not dieting, I'm not looking to lose weight, I'm perfectly healthy, I'm just looking into alternatives to using insulin as I've heard about people who eat high fat/protein diets and they're doing fine.

My endo really wants me to look into a pump, which I'm fine with, but I'd rather see what this has to offer

Of course I'll talk to my doctor, but I'm seeing what resources you all have to offer :)

Sorry to see you join the ranks. Unfortunately, you can't eliminate carbs entirely, or you'll become ketoacidotic. In your education, you were sure to have learned about ketones. Nothing wrong with low carb. There's no alternative for using insulin, you need insulin. I suspect you might be saying that because insulin makes it harder to lose weight, and in some cases makes a person gain weight. Small amounts of carbs require less insulin of course. If you do a low carb diet, include protein choices, especially at night, so you dont go low during your sleep. And if you didn't know it already, being recommended for the pump after just three months is to be congratulated!

lol

Well you would have no energy and you could die
And you could get diabetes, i'm not 100% sure on that. I think that's when you don't get enough starch or something

Recommend you read up on the Atkins Diet.

my mom's a diabetic and cutting out carbs helped her a lot... she doesn't have to give herself as many shots as she used to...

and the pump is really affective, it's what my mom has.... definately better than stabbing yourself three or four times a day....

Kip, unfortunately if you are a type 1 your pancrease doesn't produce the insulin you need. Carb counting helps alot in maintaining control. But as a type 1 you will always need insulin. This is why type 1's cannot take oral medications like type 2's can. More than likely those who are doing the low carb with high proteins and fat.. the atkins diet, are type 2 diabetics, meaning their bodies don't utilize insulin effectively.

The pump is a nice option, it truly is. Please don't even attempt going off insulin, it could result in disasterous health consequences for you. I know it sucks to be diabetic, but at least its something we can control.

Good luck luv.

Dont eat foods high in carbs , Eat lots of green veggies!! No pastries! Protein is good. I am atype 2 diabetic and take insulin twice a day. I use a pen and like it. No pain. Pumps are very costly. My sister has diabetes and controlls it with DIET alone. NO meds! Its all in what you eat!! Im 72 yrs young.
