Procedure for Ultrasound Guilded Needle Biopsy?!

Question: I have an appointment to get this done, to test for lymphoma. The person who informed me of the appointment time didn't give me a chance to ask any questions, and I really only have two. What is the basic procedure (I get the needle sticking in and ultrasound part, but will I be sedated, etc) and if my boyfriend or mom come, will they be allowed in with me to hold my hand?

Thanks!

Depends on what body location the biopsy is being taken but they probably will not sedate you. If you are nervous you can ask in advance whether taking a Valium or something similar is appropriate. They will numb up the area and then look around on the ultrasound until they are sure they have a clear shot at whatever they intend to biopsy then the actual biopsy will be over in a flash, just a few seconds. Most likely no pain during or after the procedure. They may make you wait around to make sure you do not bleed. The worst part is the anticipation before the procedure and waiting for the exam results afterward. The actual biopsy will most likely be no big deal, at least mine have never been. The entire procedure might take 15 minutes from start to finish.

Whether your mom will be allowed in the room will depend on the facility and the Dr. There are already 3 people in the room, you, the Dr and the ultrasound tech so it is already getting crowded. The procedure is over so quickly that there is really not a lot of time for comforting you until everything is already done. good luck

they will numb the area before taking the biopsy. they use the ultrasound to guide the needle so they wont have to stick you again. it just makes it easier to see and makes the procedure quicker. yes to the question as far as anyone with you. as long as its done in the surgeons office. good luck! i hope everything works out for the best. God Bless!

In the hospital where I work. the radiologist does not allow guests and family into the room where the biopsy is done because it is a sterile procedure. This lessens the likelihood of infection. There are already 3 people in the room, so you are well taken care of. You will see a MD (radiologist), a tech who is doing the ultrasound and a nurse. They are all on your side and there really isnt any room for anyone who has no job in the procedure. They will let your mom in as soon as its over with.
Depending on where the biopsy is taken, you may be given sedation with some versed and some pain medicine and maybe even a little something to calm you down.
They will numb the area before they take the sample at the very least.
Your going to do great. Dont worry
You will do fine.
