Most likely it's a boil. Boils are usually caused by a staph infection.

You might try taking large doses of vitamin C. When I feel a boil coming on I'll take 500 to 1000 mg of vitamin C every waking hour and it usually goes away without coming to a head. You should use a buffered form of vitamin C like sodium ascorbate or calcium ascorbate if you are concerned about the high dose causing a stomach problem, although I take it in any form. They also say you should lower the dosage gradually when going off it.
