Yes, in fact it was the Oncology nurses who recommend doing this.

The bad part is, the thought of machine ice cubes and popsicles makes me feel sick now.

I never did the ice while on chemo, but I do know three people that did and they didn't develop the mouth ulcers. One out of the three did not use ice for the first 2 treatments and did get the ulcers, he used the ice for the remainder of his treatment and didn't get anymore. What works for one, may not work for another but all three did very well with the ice.

Well, anything that adds moisture to the mouth will help. That is the cause for the sores, the mouth being to dry since the chemo damages the saliva glands.

Stay as hydrated as possible drinking plenty of fluids. Rinse and gargle with salt water as well as medicated mouth washes - Magic Mouth Wash(the real name) is medicated to help numb any sores you do have as well as keep them from getting infected. It does contain lidocaine though. I never could handle swishing and numbing my whole mouth, I used a qtip and dabbed on to the sores.

Now, this could be a connotation difference, but you said when the chemo is administered. Do you mean when specifically the chemo is going through the iv? Only doing so at that time wouldnt be enough to make a difference. You need to do it from the start of the first chemo all the way until your mouth is not as dry.

You also need to do this to help prevent cavaties. Your mouth isnt getting the saliva it needs to clean itself and stay healthy. You need to supplement that by first having good mouth care and hygiene, but also by keeping your mouth moist.
