What exactly do inhalers do?!

Question: My doctor has me using two different ones right now (for a few weeks, for bronchitis) and I was wondering what they did.

One's supposed to be used twice a day and the other one's supposed to be used every 4 hours.

Also, a question about using them-does it matter if you haven't eaten before using one that day? It doesn't say anything about it on the boxes...

the twice a day is most likely a steriod to lessen swelling of the bronchial tubes and lungs
the every four hour one is a bronchdialator to dialate the brochial tubes to make it easier for air to flow in and out. It does not matter if you eat or not before taking them but be sure to rinse your mouth after the steroid as you can get a yeast infection called thrush. Also try to limit caffine as it will make you more jittery with the bronchodilator.

The one that is to be used twice a day is a controller drug. It is likely a corticosteroid or a long acting bronchodilator. The one that you use every 4 hours is a fast acting inhalor to be used for immediate relieve of your breathing trouble.

Makes your wind pipe more open so more air can get through

It opens up ur airways making it easier for u 2 breathe. It doesnt matter if u eat before or after but follow the instructions and u will feel better soon... Take care..

They expand your windpipe so more air goes to your lungs.

what are the names? The one every four hours is most likely albuterol which is a bronchodialator. The other is most likely either atrovent, which is also a type of bronchodialator but one that also has a drying agent and is not an emergency/fast acting bronchodialator..or an inhaled steroid like pulmocort or flovent(which will take up to 7 days to start working and up to 30 days to reach theraputic levels).

Eating or not eating does not effect the dosage.
