Hey J. Bo, if nothing else I can sympathize with you...EXTREMELY. I have it, too. I caught it after my husband came back from Iraq four years ago and I STILL have it. Nothing I do seems to work, so I have been researching today on what to try next. Some are saying to try soaking your foot in Chlorox, which sounds like a bad idea, to me. Chlorox is dangerous and I've heard of people quitting smoking by putting tobacco between their toes because the tobacco soaks into the bloodstream...do we really want to put Chlorox into our bloodstream? I don't think so.

Some swear by tea tree oil or witch hazel and say applying this has helped them. Others are saying that blowdrying their feet with an actual blowdryer has helped.

What makes it hard to treat is the fact that fungal infections thrive off much the same environmental necessities WE need to survive. Taking oral medications can also be dangerous because they are also toxic to the human body.

Keeping this in mind, you have to think of your infection as a fungus and keep in mind what sorts of things would kill a fungus. #1 Would be to cut off the moist environment the fungus needs. Try blowdrying your feet after showering (I'm going to start doing it too). The creams made for treating fungal infections can be counterproductive because they provide a moist environment for the fungus to thrive. Some places are now selling gels in place of the creams because the gel is supposed to absorb into the skin quicker unlike a cream. If you haven't already, try the gel formulas.

Since it tends to reinfect because the infection can live in carpet, bedding, shoes, etc. you will want to spray everything down with disinfectant and wash bedding in hot water. I'm currently looking for somewhere to buy disinfectant in a large quantity so we can rent a carpet cleaner and put it in there to disinfect our carpet.

I think I'm just going to start experimenting with alcohol and other products made for drying up acne, etc. and see what happens. If I find anything that works, I'll let you know, but a few of these suggestions might help. Good luck! I know how embarrassing it is feeling like you're some kind of leper and how much it sucks that you can't even go to a shoe store and try on shoes. I've lived with it for four years and I hate it that for something seemingly so simple, there aren't many cures that have worked, so far. I'll keep you updated if I find something that really works...until then, hope some of the above might work in your case.

Have you tried using canesten cream. It is very effective, you can buy it in any pharmacy. You should also avoid wearing shoes while curing your AF. The perspiration and dark environment will promote further growth of AF. At night you can also try using a very mild solution of sulfuric acid, mix sulfuric acid with water to make it very mild. I tell it is going to be painful if you will use a strong sulfuric acid solution and it can burn your skin. My Mom used that when everything else failed and it did cure it. Do it as the last option, by the way you will need a dropper to put it in your AF. Good luck! ???
