Mono is very contagious. But let's talk about that for a minute.

How is mono spread? Mono is spread through saliva. So if your friend is coughing or sneezing then he may be spreading a bit. But the usual mode of transmission for mono is kissing, sharing utensils, cups, soda cans. It actually takes a bit more than a little aerosolized saliva to spread mono.

So while mono is very contagious, it's contagious in a specific way. Being in a room with someone who has mono isn't going to give you mono. Passing a can of soda back and forth will expose you thoroughly!

I would recommend that if your friend is feeling unwell, go to his place. If he's feeling okay, have him over and don't let him share things with your mom. And let her know, cause she might not want to risk it. Leave it up to her.

Hope that helps.

It is extremely contagious, that is why they call it the "kissing disease". Just keep him away from your mother.

Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) is the disease that causes mononucleosis. It is very contagious. This is a good tutorial on it: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/tutor...

However, about 90% of the population have been exposed to EBV by the time they reach adulthood.

However, Part II: EBV is dangerous to a pregnant woman. I would err on the side of caution!
