I totally understand what you are going through. My mother had cancer and I went with her to the first chemo appointment. She was very scared and felt sick to her stomach before they even hooked her up to the IV. I think you need to reassure her that you are there and will help her out in this difficult and scarey time. At first there are no effects from the chemo. Its more cumlative. The more she goes the worse she will feel. Ask the nurses what to look for. Ask for anit nausiea medications. Make your mom eat. Its the one time in your life when you need to have some extra weight on to help fight the cancer and sustain the chemo. My mom was very thin and she lost even more weight. Its not the same for everyone. Just be sure and have the nurses write everything down for you. I will be thinking of you. Keep me updated on how you are feeling and how your mom is doing.

awww, im sorry, ill be praying for you and your family.

My deep empathies to you and your mom. Without knowing exactly what kind of cancer she is suffering from and the exact chemotherapy agents that will be used, I simply cannot offer a reasonable answer to this question. I do beg your pardon.

Hiya..I'm a mum and I had chemo for breast cancer..depends on what type of cancer your mum has. She might not be sick and if she is be there for her. Sometimes you just want to be alone and other times you need someone to talk to.
If she talks about death...LISTEN... I know I needed to talk to my kids about what I wanted if I died, but I'm still around so that's a positive.
I'll remember your mum in my prayers.

It depends on the type of chemotherapy she is being treated with. My grandmother was treated with oral chemotherapy after surgery for bowel cancer and she said during the whole treatment she only had one day that she felt like she had the flu. Some chemotherapy doesn't affect people at all. However, some chemotherapy is meant to wipe out the majority of the blood cells to rid the body of~ for instance~ leukemia. Usually the sickest a person gets during that type of IV chemotherapy treatment is called their "Nadir." It is the time when the cell count is at it's lowest. A decrease in platelet cells can cause bleeding, in the hospital if the count is low enough, we usually treat this disorder by transfusing platelets. Patients receiving chemo can become anemic also, (a decrease in red blood cells which carry oxygen to the body's organs) this can cause weakness, shortness of breath, fatigue and a pale complexion. Patients sometimes require blood transfusions if the red blood cell count gets too low. The white blood cells can be wiped out by some chemotherapy treatments also, which can cause the body to become susceptible to illness. Outpatients receiving chemotheapy are usually instructed to call their oncologist if they have fever >100.4 degrees, shaking, chills, shortness of breath, cough, sore throat, unusual breathing, dark tarry stools, excessive bleeding from gums, blood in urine, Any redness or drainage noted from the port-a-cath, central line, neostar, picc site or any other opening that could get infected. Uncontrolled nausea or vomiting, diarrhea or pain. Your mom's oncologist and nurses are probably more than happy to explain any questions to you about your moms particular chemotherapy though. They know how important it is to educate family. You may be able to find more information on the american cancer society website also.

My mom had chemo and i found that it made her really sick to stomach and felt really tired !! It was really hard watching her go through chemo .
She hated it so so much !!
Just makes your mom is really careful around people who may be sick cause with chemo it makes your immune system more prone to picking up virus.
But other than that , Wish your mom good luck with the chemo and to u as well !!!

It depends on the type of cancer. At first I felt OK, but tired. As the day went on (my chemo treatments were all day) I started to feel sick to my stomach. That will pass and before her next treatment she will start to feel like herself again.. just a little more tired. As the chemo goes on she will get more and more tired.

You and your mom are in my prayers.

however she acts will be normal for her. worry more bout the blood they draw. she can schedule to have it done the week before her treatments and get that part out of the way. sometimes their veins collapse. the pain they are in to do this. its pathetic but the white cell count has to be high enough or chemo cant be preformed. if its too low, they give her meds with needles and have to give shots everyday for a week or more. good luck she is in my prayers.

the first day of treatment for me wasn't bad. they have meds now for all the nausea and around 3 days later i felt my worse. flu like symptoms. this came from the shot to help build you blood cells back up to help fight infections. if nausea and diarrhea start contact her oncologist. if she cant keep anything on her stomach she may get dehydrated and you have to be careful. i know i had to get fluids from the vomiting and diarrhea. just be there if she needs help. and if shes not feeling well let her rest. just let her know if there's anything that she needs or wants to talk about that you are there. please don't ask her every day how are you feeling. my family did that and its quiet annoying, since they never did it before. just be there to support her. god bless! and i hope her chemo is not bad. some people go through it with only a few problems. i hope your mom is one of those.
