Roomate has scabies?!

Question: So, my roommate has scabies, and I'm totally paranoid of getting it. I've washed all my bedding, and I'm doing alot of laundry, but (maybe just me getting totally paranoid) I'm starting to feel itchy. Maybe it's because I'm obsessing over not getting it, or whatever.. is there anything I can do to immunize or stop it before it starts?

There is nothing you can do to prevent scabies. When your roomate was diagnosed, the doctor should have asked with whom he/she shared living quarters. Everyone living in your household should be treated with the medication for scabies. Unless everyone in the house is treated the household will become re-infested as new outbreaks occur. Once treated with the medication which is typically applied before bedtime and washed off in the morning, the bed linens should be washed well and all dirty clothing washed. You can purchase a spray for your mattress at your local pharmacy. You might also note that anyone who has had close physical contact with your roomate would also need treatment.

Scabies is very contagious. Everything has to be washed and your roomate has to get a cream from the doctor to clear up the scabies. You will have to put the cream on too. It's left on over nite and washed off in the a.m.

Make sure you get treated too and call your local public health department to learn how to decontaminate your shared surroundings properly.

Here's a fact sheet about scabies. You are at risk just because you live together. I hope your room-mate is treating the scabies. This is important.

Do not share, towels, linen and clothing.
Good Luck.

Scabies is a parasite so if those bugs are around your home then yeah you can get it.
Your roommate needs to go the Dr.
