Can eatting Bannas realy help stop depression?!

Question: Strangley enough, it seems that bananas and several other foods can indeed help with depression!

Research performed at both the University of California at Davis and the Harvard Medical School has shown that symptoms of depression can be alleviated through nutrient supplementation and changes in diet. Harvard University researcher J. Michael Murphy documented that when children who "rarely" ate breakfast switched to "often" eating breakfast, they became less hyperactive, anxious and depressed.

In terms of depression, your body has the ability to create "groovy messengers". The neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine have shown themselves to be instrumental in relaxation. Low levels of serotonin are believed to cause mood disorders and depression. There are certain foods that promote the production of these key neurotransmitters.

Carbohydrates in foods such as the amazing banana, turkey, whole-wheat bread, brown rice and tomatoes elevate serotonin levels. Both bananas and turkey contain tryptophan, a protein that converts into serotonin.

Exercise also raises serotonin levels.

I eat a banana every single day and I'm still depressed as all hell.

I don't know, but it's good for a headache. :D

I'm not sure but I know it can stop cramps, I think it has something to do with the sodium-potassium ion pump and lactic acid

Maybe for an unhappy monkey, but I've never been told or heard of people eating bananas for depression.

yes, they lift up your mood and they also help you to lose weight

Never heard of that one, but bananas are full of potassium, and good for you, unless you are diabetic.

I dont think so but if eating them makes you happy, give it a try. Bananas are good for you so at least you are getting some nutrition. Depression is more of a mental state than physical; you have to deal with it on many levels; a balanced diet will help for more energy/boost your spirit but its important to work through your problems or see a doctor if you have bad depression....

A well balanced diet will help you. Bananas make you go to the bathroom.... which has some validity. The colon produces 75% of your seritonin so if your colon is moving then you will be better in the mental health department. It would take a whole heck of a lot of bananas to make you go though especially since fruit and veggies in general are nutritionally lacking. Just eat healthy food, stay awya from all the processed food, white junk, sugar, soda, and stuff like that. When you colon starts to move you will feel better. If you want to take a suppliment take a good multi vitamin like a prenatal ... nothing from walmart or GNC. (they are full of fillers)

Dave T makes a few good points there hun ? Bananas are rich in magnesium which is known as the antistress mineral and also are rich in Tryptophan ?

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that's used by the brain - along with B6, B3 , and magesium (known as the antistress mineral) - to produce serotonin (the natural feel good drug), a neurotransmitter that carries messages between the brain and one of the body's biochemical mechanisms of sleep.

The EFA's in foods rich in omega 3's such as cold water fishes like tuna, salmon, sardines and whiting are also essential in this process to nourish the neurons that are receiving the messages from the neurotransmitters ......... so there you go, you are right again with the omega 3...

The Doctor doesn't tell you that when you go complaining of depression now does he .............. he surely should though.

Foods richin Tryptophan will help induce natural sleep; reduce pain sensitivity; act as a nondrug antidepressant; alleviate migraines; aid in reducing anxiety and tension and help relieve some symptoms of alcohol-related body-chemistry disorders and aid in control of alcoholism.

Best natural food sources of Tryptophan are; cottage cheese, milk, meat, fish, turkey, bananas, dried dates, peanuts and all protein rich foods.

Best natural food sources for magnesium are: leafy and green vegies, nuts and seeds, cold water fishes such as tuna, sardines, whiting and salmon.

Best natural food sources for vitamin B3 are: the white meat of chicken, whole wheat products, roasted peanuts, fish, eggs, avoacadoes, dates, figs and prunes.

Best natural food sources for vitamin B6 are: wheat germ, fish, soybeans, brewer's yeast, cantaloupe, cabbage, blackstgrap molasses, unmilled rice, eggs, oats, peanuts and walnuts.

By taking a good quality multi B complex supplement including all the B's ie: B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12 you will support your body in dealing with the everyday stresses life throws at us. ie: new job, new home, school studies ...... the B complex of vitamins is essential for healthy digestive, neural and immune systsem functioning.

The whole food source of tryptophan and all other vitamins, minerals amino acids etc.... will always be the most nutritious and easily assimilable form.

Take care of you?
