Question for a Pediatrician, Doctor, or RN?!

Question: So I took my son to the doc on Mon with a 103 fever. Doc did a strep test that came back neg, prescribed an antibiotic, and sent us on our way.
He's been taking the antibiotic for the past couple days and is still running fever, between 99-101, and feeling pretty yucky (headaches, congestion, bad cough). I'm assuming that since the antibiotics are having no effect that its probably a virus, right?
Anyway, my question is that if the antibiotics aren't working and it is viral do we still need to continue the antibiotics?
I'm hesitant just because this is his 4th round of antibiotics this school year and I'm worried his body will build up an immunity to it.
What do you think?
Thanks

You don't build up "immunity" to antibiotics, but the germ might if you stop taking them to soon.
Take the prescription to the end - it won't hurt him.
Then decide if its viral or not - you have no way of knowing. If it's just a resistant bacteria (very possible) stopping with these without immediately starting with another is a very bad idea. Good luck.

just a biology professor who taught human biology

probably a virus, or ineffective antibiotic,or antibiotic resistant bacterial infection...no your child will not build up immunity to it, the bacteria can...your child could possibly develop an allergic reaction to it...continuing the antibiotics may prevent secondary bacterial infections ....personally you should be questioning your doctor or seek second opinion....

The symptoms your son is having is likely viral but I wouldn't stop taking the antibiotics. It's important to continue the prescription until it is completed or when your pediatrician tells you to stop.

Does your son still have his tonsils? If he still does, when he's feeling better, you might want to ask for a consult with an ENT specialist who would be able to determine whether or not your son needs a tonsillectomy. Good luck.

tell them to check for MRSA. do it NOW.
it's a possibility that it has been into the body.

just keep on the antibiotics as prescribed...your child will not build up immunity to the meds...
