I am definitely not pregnant, but i have been eating pickles like crazy for the !

Question: I've recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, i am on medication for that and for high blood pressure and high cholestorol and hypothyroidism, plus i take anti depressants. The pharmasist said that none of my meds would make me crave pickles or salt and even though pickles are calorie and fat free, they contain a lot of sodium, so be careful. I'm a little concerned because I have been eating like 4 to 6 whole dill pickles every day for nearly a month and i want more....Anyone out there know anything about this sort of craving without being pregnant? Thanks,,Lani

Hi Lani,

I do know something about that and other cravings.

When you suddenly develop a craving for certain types of foods, even if it lasts for weeks on end, there is a physical reason for it. It usually means that your body is needing an ingredient of that particular food, a vitamin or a mineral.

In your case, you could need salt at this point in time. If you are taking meds for high blood pressure, you were probably advised to not eat salt. So, your body may be registering a depreciation of sale; therefore, it makes you crave salt.

Since you are craving pickles, specifically, it may be something else, like one of the minerals that are found in pickles.

These types of cravings usually go away once your body has had enough of the vitamin, mineral or other ingredient that it needs.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, unless it is affecting your blood pressure. The craving will disappear on its own.

I hope this has been helpful to you. Good luck.

You should really consult your Doctor on this.

Check the carb content of these pickles. IF they have sugar or carbs, then maybe its the sugar you are craving. Most dill pickles don't have sugar, but you never know till you check.

Maybe you've been eating very dull tasting for a long time and just crave more variety in your food. Try having some salsa, and other spicy foods and see what happens. It might help.

I eat about 1 large jar of hamburger dills every week. I just like them. If you have high blood pressure the sodium in them can be bad for you if you eat too many. I have eaten dill pickles like this since I was a kid. Some times it's just the sour taste we crave. Cravings like this can last for days. Then, all of a sudden, it's over. It's a good thing your are craving something like this instead of sweets or carbs. My pickle "thing" is useful when I think I'm hungry (but I'm not really).
