Diabetes....:-((?!

Question: Hi,
I am 17 years old.Since the past 3-4 days, i was feeling very tired and lethargic.I had a severe constant headache but no fever.Just out of the blue, i decided to check my blood sugar level with the kit used by my grandfather. Both my grandparents had diabetes for about 30-35 years and my dad also has pre diabetes. No one on my mother;s side has diabetes.
My sugar level to my utmost horror was 239 yesterday after dinner.Today after lunch it was 250.Since yesterday, i am having dryness in my mouth and also a white deposit on my tongue. Are these symptoms due to sugar or some flu?
What should I do about my sugar levels?I am scard about telling it to my parentd and dont want any blood tests done. What should i do?Could anyone please help me?I am 17, 5 feet 7 inches height and 100kg (220 pounds) weight.
PLEASE HELP!!!!

ok ill try and give you a hand because you seem very worried. first thing is first, with a reading that high I would want to know the units, because if it truly was that high (if the units are the same ones as the ones I am thinking of, then you would be in a coma!!!!!) normal blood sugar is about 5.5mmol/l. so I would check the units of the measurement first and then try to quantify that. to be honest though, its best of being done by a doctor and here is why

although normal blood sugar is meant to be 5.5mmol/l, peoples sugar levels can be higher than this and lower than this. does this mean they have diabetes? no. not at all. what i left out, was that this measurement has be a FASTING GLUCOSE. even then there have to be two measurements taken to diagnose diabetes. after you eat there is a massive sugar surge in your blood, so yes your sugar will be sky high but again this does not mean you have diabetes. your also not hugely overweight and only seventeen, and this is very young to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, which is the type your family seem to have.

the symptoms of diabetes are tiredness, increased thirst, and increasded urination, of which you have only one, which is a symptom that can occur almost in anything. withouth the increased urination and thirst it is very very unlikely you have type 2 diabetes. it does sound like you may be ill though, and this can also put your sugar levels up because a hormone called cortisol is released, which is the stres hormone. it allows you to fight infection, but alongisde this you need energy to fight infection hence the increase in your blood sugar.

you have an extensive family history of diabetes, so I would do something about it right now to make sure you dont get it, such as exercise and eating well to maintain a good weight.

the last thing I would suggest, is to visit your Dr. although I appreciate you dont want to, they will be able to speak to you properly and in confidence and this means they will be able to get a better idea of what is going on, although I very much doubt it is diabetes. if you speak to your Dr. you also dont need to tell your parents and neither can the Dr due to patient dr confidentiality. dont be scared to speak to a health professionals, because they are after all professionals and wil treat the situation accordingly

Sweetheart, this is truely something that needs to be address immediately to a doctor, not the Yahoo Answers Community. Please take control of your life, scared or not. It's time for something to be done. 239 and 250 are not just some random numbers. Please see and doctor and tell your parent

Don't panic, but Type II diabetes is becoming all too common a condition in young people. As the others said, there are a number of things that can cause high blood glucose, and metabolic disorders are complicated in general. Make sure to get your parents or guardian to take you to a competent physician (one who will really listen, not just give you a lecture and send you on your way) ASAP!

After dinner or lunch is a very bad time to be checking your glucose numbers for potentially high glucose levels!!!!

Do it fasting, like first thing when you wake up!!! And how old are the strips you are using?? Are they new, like no more than 3 months past the expire date on them? and never opened before bottles?

You are over desired weight, and you do need to consult with the doctor about this as genetics have loads to do with whether you are a candidate or not.

Thrush, the white coating on mouth, is a major reason to go see the doctor in first opportunity!! It can cause higher glucose numbers, or be caused by them, both!!!

Quit being afraid of your loving mother, unless she slaps you for opening your mouth!! She will be very concerned about your health, too!

Uhhm. Okey. To start, When you took your sugars, had you just ate? did you wash your hands throughly and make sure they were dry before testing? If so diatetes is nothing to be scared of..and if you're sugars are THAT higgh..most likely, yes, you are a diabetic. Theres two types though you could just have type 2...or maybe type 1. I've got type 1. i was on up to 4-6 needles a day..and i'm only 16 now..i was 15 when i was diagnosed. You definitely need to telly our parents! this is definitely not something to mess around with. Some tests, you have to fast. and they cheeck your sugars after to see what the level are, if you are diabetic, you're sugars will be up when they cheeck it and you probably won't get the test done..thats what happened with me.

The dryness aned white deposit could be from keytones..if you are diabetic. Keytones just means there is TOO much sugar in your blood stream and that you're body needs insulin to move the sugar into the cells... Keytones is NOT someting you mess with. It takes a few hours to develope them..and only a day or so to get VERY sick from them!

Definitely tell your parents about your high sugars. ..beliueve me, once hat is resolved you will feel SOOO much better. I felt great, lost weight, and my vision and thirst were corrected. I had much more energy too once i got on insulin.

Do yourself a favor, tell them..orr if you're 17..you can go to a hospital yourself and get it cheecked on.
Good luck and feel free to ask if you've got any more questions.

Hi there..

These readings don't necessarily mean that you have diabetes. I suggest you see your doctor as soon as possible.

Your doctor will carry out some further tests to establish whether you are diabetic or not.

I sincerely hope that you are not diabetic and that your raised sugar levels are due to some additional and unexplained stress.

In the unlikely event that you are diabetic, I recommend that you take care of yourself and do whatever is required to keep your sugar within the acceptable range.

Good luck with your endeavours for better health
