Please help... baby with thrush?!

Question: My daughter is nine months and has had thrush for about a week and a half. we have gone through about a million tubes of nystatin ointment (the nystatin cream DOES NOT work) and TONS of zinc oxide cream for the rash and that seems to be going away however the thrush in her mouth is only getting worse even though she is on the nystatin for that too. I boil all of her pacifiers every night and switch them out after each dose of medicine. i have been painting the med on with a qtip so it stays on. I am going nuts... its so gross. its not bothering her, i mean she is eating better than usual. I am taking her back to doctor tonight but i am at a loss. i breastfeed and have been treating myself as well. And at daycare the bottles they give her are a different one each feeding and are all sterilized at the end of the day.

As you probably know, thrush is an overproduction of yeast. Yeast is normally kept in check by the good bacteria in your body. Sometimes there are things that cause these bacteria to be out of balance such as antibiotics (they kill all bacteria good and bad). The good bacteria that you need to combat this is either acidophillus or bacillus. These are commonly found in yogurt with live cultures. You can also buy them in capsule form which I take myself to keep things in check. When my son had a yeast infection after taking antibiotics I would open a capsule of the acidophillus and put it into his bottle in the morning and then I would do the same and sprinkle it into his diaper. I have also read that you can sprinkle the capsule contents directly into the baby's mouth for cases like thrush.

I am a mother of 3 and grandmother of 4. I have been where you are..........more than once. You may not like my answer, but I offer it to you with the experience of a lifetime and the wishes for results with your baby's thrush.

Here it is: Throw away the pacifiers.

I am serious. We went through this with our first 2 and the thrush disappeared - for good - a couple of days after the pacifier disappeared (as per our pediatrician's advice).

Our oldest grandson suffered the same way, and when his mommy disposed of the pacifier, the thrush went away.

I hope this helps.

ADDED LATER: I read your comments about sterilization....I did this, too. I was even accused of being "paranoid" about germs. I do not mean in any way to infer you are not cleaning them well enough. Germs happen. Pacifiers get dropped and thrush spreads so easily in warm, wet places.

Gentian Violet. It can be purchased over the counter and works like a charm when all else fails. The problem with it is that it stains everything purple so be prepared for that. You use it just like the nystatin. Best wishes.

I worked in the infant room of a day care for many years. When a baby had a stubborn case of thrush, we always recommended Gnetian Violet. It worked every time. I can't believe your doctor hasn't mentioned it. Be prepared for a nasty purple baby's mouth for a while.
