What are pollyps and why would they be in my nose?!

Question: Nasal polyps are the final stage of sluffed off swolen mucous tissue irritated by allergens. Putting it the other way around, healthy tissue when exposed to an airborne allergic stimulus that you breathe in through your nose, will begin to swell with lymph. The logic for this is that the swelling reaction serves to restrict air flow and protect surrounding tissue from irritation. Once the stimulus is past, the swelling reduces, but after many repeated cycles, the tissue becomes stretched and flabby, which is called polypoid tissue.

After still more reactive cycles the polypoid tissue forms protrusions, because after the allergic stimulus passes, the tissue is so extended that it no longer can shrink again. There is little blood supply to that tissue, so it starts to form into little teardrop shaped balls that hang by a small thread of tissue. Sometimes you can feel them flapping when you blow your nose.

Nasal and sinus polyps are totally different in cause and composition of other polyp forms found in the body, so don't be confused by use of the same word to describe different pathologies.

Laser surgery is often used to remove large amounts of polyps and polypoid tissue from the nose and sinuses.Such polyps also occur sometimes on the vocal chords. Individual polyps in the nose and throat can be removed with a surgical wire snare device to cut the small thread of tissue attaching the polyp.

Ocasionally nasal polyps are found to be infected. I have not heard of any cancerous malignancies.
