Is it typical for an asthmatic to feel debilitated at times?!

Question: Had a cold last week, which triggered inflammation. Was put on a 6 day dose of methylprednisolone which I'm tapering off day by day. Yesterday had to take another sick day from work because it felt like there were weights on my chest. Today at work there were a few hours where I felt weak and lightheaded. Had to keep my head down for an hour.

Is type of debilitating feeling typical?

yes. Fatigue is often associated with asthma and oxygen deprivation from a flare can make you feel weak, lightheaded and or dizzy. Call your doctor. The prednisone burtst may need to be extended.

Yes. It sucks, but it is typical. If it gets worse, call your doctor back.

Depends on how bad of an asthmatic you are and if you are keeping a close watch on your status.

Do you perform PEFR checks? Do you use your meds when directed? Do you carry around your rescue inhaler in case it's needed? Do you know what your triggers are?

If you answer no to any of these you need to realize that you might not be in control of your asthma.

Sounds like there may be a little more going on than just a cold and asthma. I think you should have a visit with your doctor again. I am asthmatic my self and you should have the flu shot every year and the vaccine for pneumonia given. You may need a round of a different medication. Call him before the office closes if you can if not and you get light-headed again, running a fever of over 101 go to the E.R.

On second thought call his emergency number tell him about the heavy feeling and light headed episodes. I bet he'll want a chest x-ray. Just to make sure it's not pneumonia. Good luck
and get better soon. (Remember they can cure pneumonia but not the common cold)
