I, too, had a lot of them when I was younger, in my 30's I had one which sounds like yours, I went to the doctor because my lip was so big & painful. He told me it was a virus (he had one too, what a suprise!) He said I needed to find what triggered it. Over exposure to the sun, which is more like sunburnt lip. For me, it was citric acid, tomatoes, orange juice, soft drinks with citric acid in it. Since knowing what caused them, I take citric acid in low amounts, then I'm fine. He gave me nothing to put on it, I used Carmex. That's been 30 yrs free of them now. Hope you can find your cause.

Caused by a herpes virus.... it lays dormant for long periods of time, I gather. You can not 'get rid' of it... just hope it doesn't flare up. As a virus, there is no apparent 'cure'... but a number of over-the-counter lip gels do ease the situation (this, from experience).

research red marine algae

you can get rid of cold sores...by using carmex for cold sores and if it has gotten bigger then you probably got it dirty and infected but carmex should work........

i had it that bad once oh my god! it was bad it toke a long time to get it to go away. i have never had it that bad again but i still get them i found this stuff that works real well and your fingers never touch your lips, it is called Banadyne-3. I LOVE this stuff. if you can't find it in any stores you can find it on Amazon.com

Try Aloe Vera gel with Lidocaine, the kind you use for sunburn, I've used it and it's worked for me. I use a q-tip cut in half to apply a thin layer on sore and throw it way. Apply as needed. It's healing and gone before you know it.
I had my lip swell up real bad a couple of times, so I understand what you're going through. Best thing is to stay out of the sun when possible and use a lip balm with at least 15 SPF sunscreen, all yr long. Stress will cause breakouts also. Good Luck.
