Why is my belly button piercing getting irritated?!

Question: I've had my belly pierced for 7 years now, and only once did it get irritated from a certain ring. I had a ring in for almost a year and it never bothered me..then it started to so I switched it to one of my old ones that I used to wear all the time...now about two weeks later its irritated again..I clean it and everything, why could this be happening? Do I need to wear gold?

You can suddenly become allergic to something (such as nickel in the jewelry) even if you've never been allergic to it before.

Stainless steel, titanium, or PVC jewelry might be a good choice. I especially like my own PVC navel ring.

If you've recently switched bath soap, body soap, shampoo, conditioner, laundry detergent, fabric softener....(etc.) these may be also irritating your piercing. Even after 7 years, there may still be some nonintact skin inside the piercing.

Even if you haven't switched any of the above lately, sometimes manufacturers of soaps and detergents change formulas and you don't realize it.

Keep cleaning the piercing, but be gentle. Sea-salt soaks and an antimicrobial lotion soap (Provon http://www.bodymattersgold.com/a_images/... is the best; I use it on all my piercings) may help.

You could be getting an infection of some sort...or just allergic to the metal
