Diarrhoea is a result of a gastric unbalance, meaning a virus or bacteria has entered the digestive system that your body then tries desperately to expel! What it does to humans: it causes dehydration as it is very difficult to keep the fluids up to what is being lost in the toilet. Because you feel sick you are less likely to eat and drink so again a problem for dehydration also lack of nutrients, meanwhile any nutrients that do get in are quickly lost while your bowel is busy in rush hour traffic. Gastric diseases spread easily, through contact, say if someone uses a toilet and fails to wash their hands they will pass it on to everyone they touch with their unclean hands. It's a very common condition which exists every day all over the world, I can't help you with any numbers or percentages though.

1- dehydration.
2- flies and contamination.
3- uncountables.

Diarrhoea is a symptom, rather than a disease in itself. It is commonly due to an infection by bacteria (for example, e. coli and shigella are common causes of traveler's diarrhoea, salmonella from food poisoning in undercooked eggs or chicken), viruses, protozoa and parasites. Diarrhoea can result from taking some medications, like antibiotics, as antibiotics disturb the normal flora in the gut. This can allow more harmful bacteria to breed and cause damage to the lining of the intestines, reducing the intestine's ability to reabsorb water. As a result, water remains inside the intestine and you get diarrhoea. Diarrhoea can also be a symptom of other diseases like Crohn's disease and bowel cancer. Some people who are lactose intolerant may even experience diarrhoea after ingesting milk. The list is endless.

Diarrhoea resulting from e. coli and shigella can be due to living in unsanitary conditions, or drinking contaminated water. Contaminated water might also contain amoeba, which is a protozoa that can also cause diarrhoea. Salmonella is often responsible for food poisoning due to meat that has been undercooked or has been improperly stored (e.g. left outside instead of in the fridge).

As for the last question, I would say just about everyone would have experienced diarrhoea many times in their lifetime.

Hope that helps!
