I'm using nicotine gum....?!

Question: i've been using nicotine gum as a substitute for chewing tobbacco. Now I'm not sure if this works the same as smoking but I figured that it's better to put 1 harmful substance into my body rather than 10... Anyways, any thoughts to whether or not this is an accepted practice?

Nicotine doesn't take long to leave your body. After that, its' amazing how people find out that its' more a behavior or habit problem than it is addiction, like automatically reaching for a cigarette every time you answer the phone, or putting a plug of tobbaco in your mouth when you settle down to watch TV in the evenings. These habits can be unlearned with practice.
The need for oral satisfaction plays a big part. With the habit you have, you can still chew, but not tobacco. Chew gum, and please don't chew the kind you're chewing now. It' s expensive. And plain old gum will do. It's safer, too.
For cigarette quitters, keep gum in empty cigarette packs that you keep on your desk or carry in your pocket. That takes care of the 'reaching' habit. You don't have to give up reaching! Chew on toothpicks. Put small lollipops in your mouth. Anything to keep the mouth action going. Keep these substitutes handy so they will be availabile to you. Pretty soon, you won't need them anymore.
Remember, it's not going to be easy, but you can do it!
Good luck to all of you.

You are substituting and it is better but you will still remain with sub-conscious desire to chew

You really have to just quit and the secret is that you will still have a desire to chew, just less and less frequently

The nicotine addiction will go away quickly but the sub-conscious attachments that you have formed will last much longer

GOOD LUCK

i'm assuming you're referring to all the chemicals in the chewing tobacco. nicotine is a powerful drug which you really need to wean yourself from, so the nicotine gum will help with fewer cancer causing agents. like the previous guy said, teh psychological aspect is at least as hard to deal with as the physical addiction. "nature hates a vacuum" so in addition to what you're doing, find other non-nicotine substitutes - checking a straw or something. nicotine is also a great stress-reducer, so think about ways to do that: exercise, meditation, squeezing a stress ball...and keep reducing your intake of nicotine. all the best!!!!!
