Does the Metformin make you sleepy/tired?!

Question: I'm yawning at work and my eyes are wanting to close all the time. What's up with that? Sugar still up above 180 to 200. I did hit 146 which is good for me. But this metformin gives me a stomach ache right at the top of my stomach by the esophagus. Gives me a taste in my mouth like glue.

get a bottle of generic Tums to have with the Metformin when it does that to you. It really helps.

Yes, while you are getting used to the Met it can cause you to be really tired and feel like you have the flu or something. This will get better with time. The nasty taste is another of the side effects that is totally undesirable, but usually inevitable. It too will either go away or you will get used to it. I am not too clear on whether I got used to it or it went away.

I have been taking Metformin for about 11 years now. It does help to take it with food! It does help to take Tums type med, if other gastric distress, take Pepto.

This is a systemic drug and takes about 3 to 4 weeks to become really effective in lowering your glucose numbers. As you get used to taking it, the dosage may be increased to where it is really effective.

It doesn't work overnight!! Skipping a dose because you want an alcoholic drink is not a good plan. Take the med!! Test alcoholic drinks at home with someone trusted. Only have one like beer or glass of wine. Test glucose carefully while doing this. Eat!!! Do not take more than what the doctor Rx'd as it doesn't cover sins like insulins do!!

Do plan into your food plan a weekly treat. Just a small tiny bit of something. I like my ice cream and have half cup of real ice cream once a week. Or I may have a half serving of chocolate cake. This helps us to stay on our food plans without craving something otherwise sinful!!!

this is a side effect see your doctor soon are you takining it with food??????? thats a must

Sugar levels should be between 4 and 7 not 146. Are you sure you aren't talking about your blood pressure? If your sugars are low that would make you sleepy, if your blood pressure is too high, which if it is the 146 for a diabetic it is too high, that could make you sleepy and feel queezy. I would talk to your doctor about this, maybe you are having a reaction to the metformin and he/she can put you on something else. Good luck. And stay healthy.

My wife uses Metformin... She tells me sometimes it makes her a little tired (I would attribute this to "sugar sluggishness" like if I eat something really sugary, it makes me a bit sleepy until I start getting the energy from the sugar. It takes 1 calorie to get 3 from sugar... so when you first start digesting sugar, you are burning energy, and if ya don't have excess energy to do the digesting, it makes you tired) But not tired and yawny all the time, and only for a while. However, she doesn't think your blood sugar should still be that high (hers used to be at the levels you are experiencing (200+) but now average 120-130. We wonder if you are taking enough, she takes 2000 mg daily. Also, she says she takes it with her first meal of the day or yes, she gets indigestion. (burning at top of stomach/throat)... Talk to your doctor about the still-high blood sugar and indigestion. I hope this helps. Take care.

If you are currently taking the generic of Glucophage which is metformin then you should contact your doctor about your side effects. My mom tried to take metformin and she continuously was sick to her stomach, having bad headaches, uncontrolled blood sugars and many more symptoms. Her doctor put her on the name brand which is glucophage and she has not had anymore problems. Yes, it is more expensive but which is the worst of the two evils, less money or feeling bad

I take 3 x 500mg Metformin SR (slow release) with my evening meal without any problems. Does anyone else take SR?
