Well, it's unlikely we'll ever have a magic pill to cure these ailments, as both present significant problems - HIV with its ability to sit latent and protected from pharmaceutical treatment for long periods of time, and cancer because of the fact that no 2 patients' cancer are exactly the same.

However, we have relegated HIV infection, at least in the western world, to a manageable infection that one can live with for decades, and we're looking to personalize cancer therapy more and more through diagnostic approaches and new mechanisms, including immunotherapy. The only real way to ever beat either of these as a global society will be to isolate them through such treatment until we can find a way to prevent them outright.

HIV treatment, whil a seemingly easier hurdle, may be more challenging to solve, since we've already started down the road to relegate it to a practically non-deadly infection (provided adequate treatment is available), and we might stop at that rather thatn try to eradicate it.

cancer will never go away completely. We can find ways to minimize our risk of cancer, through getting better at identifying risk factors, and using diagnostics and vaccines to prevent many tumors, but as long as humans are exposed to carcinogens on a daily basis, there will always be cancer. And, since the sun itself can cause cancer, I think we're tuck with it. Hopefully someday we'll reach the point when it will be more like HIV, though, across the board - we might find a way to at least contain it.

I THINK SO ONE DAY IN THE FAR FUTURE!

Technology is always improving, and surely they will find something that will prolong it further, or clear it completely.

Well i hope.

it's possible

Disease will chase us in a never ending arms race.
As to which diseases will stay and which will go, I really can't say. I would suspect that HIV will be around for a long time. It has an uncanny ability to mutate rapidly.
Cancer on the other hand? I think we may live to see the day when Cancer deaths are minimal.

Yes. But then it will backfire on us just like it did in I am Legend!

There are already treatments that "cure" lots of different kinds of cancer. Hopefully someday AIDS can be eradicated

it could be healed i believe... iFFFF we believe in the HEALER....
but if your looking for a scientific answers, i have read one for cancer.... the flower periwinkle is being used...
but for aids? i don't know

If i knew the answer to that i would be the mos sought after person in the world.
but why not. we have effectively eradicated diseases such as smallpox. we just need to wait for the right person to come along with a cure

Its hard to target the AIDS virus, because once it infects the host..it can disguise itself as a 'normal' cell of our body. The White blood cells will therefore not attack, but eventually the virus will reprogram the codes in our body where our body (the White Blood Cells) will attack itself thinking its a foreign pathogen.

With Cancer, if its malignant and has metastasized its hard to target, because it will have spread to other parts of the body, disrupting normal function and eventually causing uncontrolled cell proliferation...

It will be hard, but I believe we will only be able to develop drugs that will allow us to manage these ailments...not cure

I dont think anyone on yahoo answers has the answer to that one.

i dont really think so maybe in a hundred yr because they dont even know the virus of the diseases

There will be some cures for cancer but some will stay stubborn and have a lower recovery
I don't think AIDS will be cured but a vaccine against it may come to be and I know there will be better meds to keep people with it feeling better.

It is not that hard to imagine that one day we can see a vaccine for AIDS and cure for cancer.
Medicine as other sciences is developing rapidly.
for example hundred years ago if someone's child dies after birth, it was a natural thing and few children survive. But nowadays if you hear someone's child died after birth you cannot bypass the matter so easily and may think that the doctor had underacted.
So you see, sometime in future, people will laugh to us who are afraid of AIDS.

research groups like this one are looking to find cures http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/ try this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosetta@hom... http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/rah_we... a story from usa today http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science/200...
