I am having trouble breathing and my arms are tingling.. what could this be?!

Question: I feel as though I can't take in full breaths. I keep needing to yawn so as to take in more air, and my arms are tingling pretty bad. I also feel very dizzy. I have asthma, could this be it? Or do you think it could be something else? I will be getting myself off to the doctors, but just wondering if anyone else has had this before. My inhaler doesn't seem to be helping like it usually does.

Oh, and i'm a smoker *cough cough* ! I know this doesn't help and what I am experiencing is most likely due to this. But has anyone else had this and have any idea what it is? It's worrying and very uncomfortable as I really can't breath properly!

Dig It seems to be on the mark... it could be anxiety, it can affect both breathing and cause problems with arms and legs... essentially hyperventilating. Not saying this is what you have or are doing, so don't worry about it... see a doctor in the morning if you can wait that long or take yourself to A&E (don't phone an ambulance or anything)... they will give you an EEG and confirm what is going on. Maybe a short course of beta-blockers or a homeopathic solution is the answer, bretahing exercises can help some if you identify when it is starting... but if it is anxiety, you need to get to the root cause as soon as you can really... that is the only cure. Try not to worry and breath deeply and evenly, this may help but I suspect you have gone too far already and just need a bit of rest for the moment.

Essentially, when you hyperventilate, you are breathing shallowly and the air is not circulating around your lungs sufficiently well.. this causes a reduced amount of fresh oxygen in the blood. Hence the yawning, tingling extremities, dizziness.

You have asthma too, so it could be something related to that, but this sounds like classic hyperventilation to me.

i have the same thing , i know what you are going threw , you need to get a breathing treatment i have to do it everyday when i wake up because it gets so bad where ireally cant breathe

It could be aniexty nervous about anything.. ? GAD Generalized Aniexty Disorder Causes Temporary spikes in blood preasure which could make your Left Arm tingly and a Rapidly high Abnormal pulse which could affect breathing ..Relax / take a warm shower the steam will help with the breathing.. smoking could also cause temporary spikes in blood preasure which affect breathing .. I would contact a docotor in the morning and try not to smoke..Hope i helped

i am a nurse andif your breathing gets that you are having difficulties go to casuality you may need the nebuliser

smoking infects the lungs you need to stop and go see a doctor

Go to the emergency room if you are having that kind of trouble with your breathing. I'm worried about you.
NurseMom :)

Call the paramedics now! You sound as though you are experiencing oxygen deprivation. If you can't breathe properly, and it has lasted a while, your body cells are not getting enough oxygen. Call them as quickly as possible. And put out that cigarette! From a COPD sufferer/asthmatic.

If you're at all worried you should go to casualty or if you're in the UK call NHS direct on 0845 46 47 or in an emergency 999.

Having said that the other posters may well be right, anxiety can cause uneven breathing that can make your fingers tingle and you feel slightly light headed. But if you're at all uncertain, get to casualty or make the call. It's not worth the risk and at a minimum it'll put your mind at rest.

could be one of many things:

panic attack, which is causing your breathing to be irregular and so your blood oxygen supply to be reduced and so parts of your body go numb,

heart problems

sitting in a wierd position or leaning on a certain muscle which could have prevented your body from circulating blood properly and so caused pins and needles and breathing difficulites.

Or it could be your asthma, if you get up and walk around or try being active for about 15 mins and it either doesnt go away or it worsens, contact a doctor asap.

I had that happen to me frequently while I was a 3 pack a day smoker.... I quit on my doctors advice. The best thing Ive ever done ! I havent had any palpitations in almost a year!
YOU MUST STOP SMOKING CIGARETTES ! It is a high price to pay to die early !

please get this checked out.if you have asthma then go and get your blood gases don or they call it sats.i have copd so i know what i am talking about .go down every avenue to get it sorted it may be panic attacks ,infection, try breathing up your nose then out your mouth that can help dont get too hot put a fan on .drink plenty of water
