Risks of occasional cigarettes?!

Question: I used to smoke socially, then ended up chaining, now quit (and am thrilled) but does anyone know if in my future it is possible to have the odd smokes throughout my life or is the risk factor still high. Basically the former anti smoker that I was, became convinced by a friend that if you had the odd cigarette your body would not be affected by the toxins in a cigarette. If anyone is a doctor or medical expert I would love your opinion on this. Thank you.

I am an ex smoker 3 years now but will admit to the odd one with a glass or 2 of vino. I have had not found it difficult to not smoke the next day or anything. I use to smoke the exes so I never brought them so didn't have them laying around.

Truth is if you haven't got the will power don't even try one!

You will always have the urge to go back to 20 a day if you try taking the odd one, so I wouldn't bother. What's the secret to giving up, as I'd love to stop again. I quit for over nine years and started again during my divorce, that was 15 years ago and now, due to more stress I am smoking 2 fags an hour!!

I think it depends on what constitutes 'the odd cigarette' - one a year? one a week? one a day? You've been amazing and given up, it would be such a shame to regress right back into it (like I have three times after giving up & then having 'the odd one')

What, so after trying so hard to give the disgusting habit up, you still are planning on having the 'occasional' cigarette. Don't bother. Keep fags out of your life for good, they're not going to do you any good.

Well done that you have given up. Even if you have the urge to have the odd one be strong and don't. I have tried so many times but can't.

Its all down to will power. Any toxin is bad, no matter how small a quantity.

Good luck with giving up. But if you tell yourself that you can never have another cigarette then you will want one. Tell yourself that you can have one if you want, but you choose not to. As for the health risks of the odd smoke, it cant be any worse than the pollutants we breathe in every day from traffic etc.

The risk factor of the odd cigarette leading to a return to a full blown smoking habit far outweighs the medical risks of just the one ciggy.
Believe me, I have tried to give up many times and this has always been my downfall.
