Monocytes are one type of white blood cell that circulate around the body in the blood.Think of them as the "clean up crew". After the other white cells destroy bacteria and viruses in the body, the monocytes move in and get rid of the dead cells, bacteria, etc. They are the last cells to arrive at the site of an infection and the last ones to leave. So a high monocyte count usually means there is some type of chronic infection or inflammation of some kind. The "bumps" you describe sound like inflammed lymph nodes( what are sometimes called "swollen Glands"). Since nodes in more than one location are swollen it would seem that whatever the problem is, it is not limited to a small area.

Unfortunately, there are a large number of reasons high numbers of monocytes can occur. They can range from the not serious to much more serious. Since your doctor has given your son a thorough exam, he is the best person to determine if you should be worried about it. Did he give you a diagnosis? If he didn't seem worried by the slightly high count, he probably feels that it is a normal response based on his diagnosis and that it will drop as the main illness gets better. Since they are the last cells to leave their number tends to remain high even after the initial problem is about cleared up.
