to become a medical lab technician (MLT) you have to attend an accredited school for 2 yrs (associate degree). An MLT tests a variety of specimens from the body (blood, urine, stool, and other body fluids). The tests can be ran on automated intruments and some are manual tests. In an MLT program you will learn the theory behind these tests. At your internship site at a clinical laboratory (usually a hospital lab) you will be fully trained on how to perform these tests. To become a MLT a person usually like science and computer/intrumentation. There are many areas of the lab but the main ones are: Blood Bank, Hematology/Coagualtion, Chemistry, and Microbiology. You will be trained in all of those areas including Phlebotomy.

you ususally work with blood specimens, fecal matter, urine samples..etc. You just do the required test for the patients and usually may have to test for a certain condition. Hope this helps...but also try google, it will be a lot more informative! good Luck!

Primary function of MLT is running tests on body fluids, i.e. blood, serum, urine, sputum, amniotic fluids, gastric, etc. Also could include microscopic test for parasites. Microbiology if you are in a small (do everything) lab. Equipment depends on the size of the lab you are working in and if it is departmentalized. MLT is a very interesting, rewarding profession. However, with today's government involvement, a lot of "paper" work is required but bench techs should not be responsible for this. See if there is a lab in you area that would allow you to visit/observe for a week or so. That would give you a better idea and help you decide if this is what you want to do.
