Oh my dear, I am so sorry. It must be very frightening. I can't imagine what you feel but I do sympathise deeply.
16 yrs old and just about to begin life, it would be very scary to think you may go deaf but wait, think about it. You have had hearing for 16yrs. Have you considered those wee babies who are born deaf? How do you think they cope?
Speak to your doctor, there must be help available to you. You can learn to lip read and you can learn sign language.
You are going deaf, not brain dead. There are many things you can do. A normal life is still there for you if you choose not to feel sorry for yourself. So you can't be a telephonist! So what? Be an accountant, chemist, garbologist, teacher, filing clerk, anything you like that means you earn a living and have fun, responsibility, wages, bills to pay, spouse, children etc, etc, etc. Personally, I would rather be deaf than blind if I had to choose, I would still be able to be self sufficient and my sight is failing so I have thought about it.
Deaf is not dead, grieve what you have lost (fair enough too) but then go visit the society for the deaf and meet some other non hearing people. They are normal people just like you with likes, loves, hates, jobs and everything a hearing person has except hearing.
Read the story of Helen Keller. You can still see and speak. You can walk, enjoy sunshine, communicate with friends. Can you understand where I am coming from? I hope so and I really do understand your grief, just don't stay there for too long or you will be too bogged down to move on. Please see your doctor about meeting people with your disability and learning from them.
Guess what!! Yes it is unfair but you have a head start on many, you have some time left in which to learn lip reading before you no longer hear, that will be a big help if you use it.
Take care my dear, I hope you can move upward from here.
