Is Cancer A Terminal Illness...?!

Question: ...can cancer be defeated by the force of will and strength of thought as Lance Armstrong did? I know his treatment was brutal, but he survived it and I wonder if others who were less positive would have made it through the treatment?

All types of cancer are potentially terminal; Many of us have made it through treatment and are in remission, as Lance Armstrong is.

Armstrong had conventional cancer treatment, and this as well as a measure of good luck can be credited with his good health.

There is actually no evidence that 'being positive' or having a 'positive mental attitude' helps fight cancer - that it does has become received wisdom and people quote it as if it's a proven fact. It isn't, and actually there's evidence that it doesn't make any difference. This report in the British Medical Journal explodes the theory that a 'fighting spirit' is associated with longer survival from cancer or that 'hopelessness and helplessness' means poorer outcomes. The researchers analysed existing studies from1979 onwards; their conclusion is:

'There is little consistent evidence that psychological coping styles play an important part in survival from or recurrence of cancer. People with cancer should not feel pressured into adopting particular coping styles to improve survival or reduce the risk of recurrence.'

Unknown...Life is a terminal illness though which gets us all in the end.

It can become just that if it's not diagnosed early enough

I believe that if your strong enough then you can beat this dreaded disease. If your talking about yourself then good luck

I don't know if cancer can be defeated just by the force or will of someone -- if that were the case more people would survive -- moms wouldn't leave their children, husbands wouldn't leave their wives, etc.. However, I am sure having a strong attitude and willpower makes a difference. After all, no one can succeed at anything if they have given up.

Yes it killed my father.!!!

A lot depends on where the cancer is. No it is not always a terminal illness. I had cancer in1992 and I am still here 16 years later and not ill at all. I had an operation to remove it and it was successful. So the answer is no it is not always a terminal illness but unfortunately sometimes it can be . It depends on where it is and also your will to survive.

it depends on so many factors.. how quickly it's caught and the person who sadly has it.

Some of the cancers are very aggressive how they attack the body so it depends on that.

given time, hopefully things will improve in the medicine world.

I believe that life is terminal. we're all going to die one day from something or other. We can prolong life by taking various treatments to cure or heal things. But when your numbers up ... it's up I'm afraid.

It all depends on how far alonf=g it is when it is found,
and how good your doctors and how hard you are willing to fight it. My daufgther just fought her battle And 100%in the clear as of
last week,

Many cancers are curable. Sometimes it is the treatment that kills not the Cancer

Lance Armstrong is a phenomenally fit individual and could afford cutting edge medical attention along with his positive attitude as a competitive cyclist. He had a head start don't you think over us mere mortals and fair play to him.I,and it's just my opinion think you need more than just a positive attitude as I've known a positive person succumb very quickly despite an almighty effort.

Terminal illness is a medical term popularized in the 20th century to describe an active and malignant disease that cannot be cured or adequately treated and which is expected to lead to the eventual death of the patient. This term is more commonly used for progressive diseases such as heart disease or cancer than for trauma.
Most of the cancer patients will loose interest in life after surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
