People get cancer more often now because there are more carcinogens in the air, and in the things around us. Carcinogens are subtances that can casue cancer. If you think about your everyday life, there are so many chemicals that your breathe in(Pollution, 2nd hand smoke, etc) and things you use(Microwave, etc) that can make you unhealthy, and could get into your system and mutate your cells. Cancer is a mutation of cells, and eventually the cells group together to form a hard clump of cells, which is a tumor.
The only way to aviod it is to do what you can to reduce the amounts of carcinogens your expose yourself to.

No; cancer is largely a disease of ageing, and better health care means more people are living into old age, which means there are more people to get the diseases of old age, including cancer.

Better screening and diagnostic techniques make it appear that there is more cancer these days, because people are diagnosed whose cancer would have gone unnoticed in the past.

Another thing that makes it appear that more people are getting cancer is that we hear so much about it, through an ever more sophisticated media and from people who are much more willing to talk about cancer than people used to be - I remember when a lot of people mouthed the word instead of saying it out loud.

Apart from cancer among the increasing elderly population, there is not actually an increase in the number of people getting cancer

I think a lot of it has to do with stress, poor diets, & pollution in the air we breath & in the air around us (microwaves & radiowaves) that surround our bodies with unknown agitating agents that are passing through our molecular structures, (aka bodies)!

No, we are not living that much longer and that is not the reason. I think the 3rd answer is very close to the truth. Spend a few dollars and buy my e-book and you will never have to fear cancer again. Go to my website.

WOW Jake - Who is "they" who maybe invented something and who want us to get cancer and die off? I hope you don't mean doctors. No doctor likes cancer.

I was a cancer specialist MD for 20 years and retired young because I had seem quite enough. I always had far more patients than I wanted to see. Most doctors who see cancer patients do not become rich. I certainly did not. Doctors who want to make a lot of money go into other fields.

If the "they" is the tobacco companies, you may have a point - - but in reality, they just want to sell their products. They don't want us to die from them.

The "they" might be us - or at least those of us who choose to smoke. 100 years ago cancer was not even in the top ten causes of death in the USA. This if chiefly because the average life expectancy was 47 years, and the vast majority of cancer patients are over 50 years of age - - most in fact are over 60. Cigarette smoking was far lower 100 years ago. We know that smoking causes many deaths - a number each year exceeding all the battle deaths the U.S. suffered in four years of WW II.

Those who smoke clearly give themselves health problems quicker and cause many of their own cancers. I don't buy the argument that people are forced to start smoking. It is a personal choice.

Of course there are many other carcinogenic chemicals in our industrial age environment, but these have a chance to cause cancer primarily because we live so much longer.
It is estimated that if people live long enough and never die from anything else, all will eventually get cancer. In men, it would be prostate cancer.

People are not meant to be immortal. I don't believe there is a conspiracy to give us health problems and malignancies earlier. The way things are going, younger working people will be greatly burdened by the increasing numbers of us older people who are retired. You might eventually hope we do not all live too long. Good question.
