Dear Lizy, I'm sorry you're having such a rough time with the glucose tolerance test. Unfortunately, that's the usual way for doing it. You have your blood tested before the drink, this is to give them something on which to base the following results. That would be termed your fasting blood sugar level. After the drink, which I know is sickly sweet ... probably why you're finding it so difficult to keep it down, they test your blood sugar at fairly regular intervals to see what's happening with your blood sugar control. Obviously, if it remains high, you will be termed either diabetic or you have gestational diabetes which, unfortunately, puts you at added risk of developing diabetes later in your life. (Sometimes the diabetes just stays with you, but normally gestational diabetes 'goes away' after you've had your baby.)

The reason jellybeans were suggested is that they contain a large amount of sugar (glucose), which is basically what they've already tried giving you, but in liquid form. You will probably find that the jellybeans are easier to keep down. The chances are that you'll eat the jellybeans INSTEAD of having to drink the glucose drink again.

Unfortunately, it's imperative that the test is carried out as diabetes can put both mother and baby at risk.

The diagnosis of anemia came because when they test your blood they're screening for a number of conditions. It's not due to the drink that they gave you that they found that out ... simply that they were screening you for various things.

Best of luck to you and your baby.
