they are not symptoms they are characteristics, some characteristics are: epicanthal fold on the eyes, broader bridge of the nose, lower set ears, larger tongue, shallow pallet, thicker back of the neck, brushfield spots in the iris' of the eyes (white flecks that make it look like their eyes sparkle) low muscle tone, shorter stubbier fingers, sometimes the pinkie finger is bent, simean crease in the palm of the hand, sometimes heart conditions like av-canal, intestinal blockages, sandal toe (large gap between the big toe and the next) flat feet, slower developement. not all of these characteristics need to be present all babies born with ds may have some of them or all of them it depends on the individual.

1 in 800 live births in the USA have a child with down syndrome, it can happen to any woman at any age and is not exclusive to just older women. in fact the largest group of women having kids with ds is under 35 yrs simply because they are the largest group having kids.
What treatment is available with suffers of the defect?
they do NOT suffer! and it is not a defect it is a syndrome! (just wanted to clarify that). at this point in time there really is no specific treatment BUT with the help of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy along with special ed from birth on will help the child reach their goals in development.
What agencies are available to help parents of children born with this defect.
Early Intervention (also called birth to 3) SSI disability, medicaid or title 19 health insurance, down syndrome associations, internet groups and a ton of others that vary in name within each state so it would be pointless for me to tell you them...and besides......you need to do some of your homework, I can't do it all!
