Antibiotics are effective against diseases caused by bacteria only. And the antibiotic prescribed depends on the disease.

However, over the years bacteria have become resistent so some antibiotics and newer stronger antibiotics need to be used. Some bacteria are even resistent to our strongest antibiotics.

Resistence to antibiotics is reinforced when people don't take them properly or take them when not needed (such as when they have a cold). When people don't finish antibiotics, they feel better but some bacteria causing the illness may still be in the body, and this is the bacteria that was stronger. if it
survives and makes the person sick again the same antibiotic may not be effective this time because it is the stronger bacteria that survived.
