Type 1 diabetes and fast food?!

Question: My husband has type 1 diabetes.. started 2 years ago and he is almost 26 now. He eats fast food for every single meal. He will get burgers and take of one side of the bun. Im so worried about him because I think this is so unhealthy, esp. with his diabetes! He is very thin and is very active. What should I do!? He won't listen to me.

Welllll .... fast food at every meal is going to be harmful to anyone, diabetic or not. But diabetes wise, when you have type 1 the most important thing is if he's keeping his blood sugars within range. Type 1 is not caused by obesity and poor diet, and doesn't have some of the same restrictions as a type 2 would have. A type 1 would probably be okay having more fast food meals than a type 2 would. Not that I'm recommending them :o)

His being thin kind of bothers me though. It could be explained away by his being active. But most type 1's tend to be a bit chubby ... the injected insulin causes their bodies to store more fat. And usually when a type 1 is getting thin, that means their sugars aren't under control at all .... which can lead to ketoacidosis, which is immediately life threatening.

He should know this stuff. If he really doesn't then he needs to find a new endocrinologist who's telling him what he needs to know. Get him to do some reading ... this is the book that the hospital gave me when my daughter was diagnosed:

You can read the whole book from the links ... it's exactly the same as the hard copy I have here. It's an excellent book.

yes

It is dangerous and extremely unhealthy for him--American Diabetes Association has web site--do your research there--you can also find phone no. where they will send you printed info. that you can lay around, hoping he will read. He is full grown adult and should know better--if he has had any education in the disease. If you harp at him, he won't listen to you, just try making small comments and saying you read it on internet that someone else is having problems. It may be a lie, but if you leave it at one or two sentences, and then drop it, he might start listening. You can also join support group--Yahoo Groups has a caregiving support group-you may be able to get some ideas about what to do from them.
