Early signs of diabetes?!

Question: So basically a couple times where i didn't eat and i almost fainted. One time i woke up and went straight to the shower and in the shower my arms started to feel heavy and everything started to turn black. Another time i woke up to go snowboarding, and we didn't eat, on the gondola after one run, the same thing happened where i felt really heavy and everything started to dim. Someone had a pack of M&M's and i was fine after that. I used to have good vision and now i have to wear glasses to see far away. i am always tired no matter much or little i sleep and i get bad breath if i don't eat every hour or so. I also have lower back pain wear my kidneys are often. Are these early signs of diabetes? Or do I have it right now?

Your symptoms seem rather unspecific, and although you can't rule out diabetes, it doesn't fit the classical signs of diabetes.

The four classical signs for diabetes are polydypsia, polyuria, polyphagia, and dry or irritating skin. Translated, they mean lots of thirst, lots of urine, lots of appetite, and....dry skin :P

But back to being serious, the symptoms you felt, the ones that resolved with m&m's, that was a hypoglycemic attack. Anyone with LOW (not high) blood sugar can experience them. The reason why you hear it happening to diabetics so often, is because they are on diabetes medications. These medications can lower the blood sugar (thus treating diabetes), but if it lowers the blood sugar too much, it can cause hypogycemia, or low blood sugar. Just watch your meal times, or bring along a candy bar during long trips, and you'll be fine.

The eye problems diabetics frequently have are cataract and retinopathy. Both these conditions are usually not alleviated by glasses, and they are complications of diabetes, not symptoms. This meaning you will have to be a diabetic for a certain period of time to actualy experience these complications.

All in all, I think a simple fasting blood glucose test can put all your worries about diabetes to rest. Just fast for 8 hours (at night) and go to the nearest joint where you can get a finger prick glucose test done. If it is less than 100mg/dL, you're safe for sure! :) If it's somewhere between 100-120mg/dL, you might be having pre-diabetes. If it's anything more than that, go to your doctor to have a venous blood sugar test, which wil confirm if you are a diabetic.

Till then, live well, and eat better! :)

Not necessarily, but if anyone doesn't eat it will lower their sugar levels and could eventually cause damage. My partner has recently been diagnosed type 2 diabetes and he had no symptoms, it was found after an accident and they checked his blood, I suspected he was a diabetic because of his mood swings.
